  • Publication number: 20060009156
Abstract: A mobile station includes an adjustable member for increasing a separation distance between an audio signal output device and an electronic circuit to reduce EMI proximate the audio signal output device caused by the electronic circuit. In one embodiment, the adjustable member comprises a slide member that extends at least a portion of the audio signal output device away from the electronic circuit to increase the separation distance. In another embodiment, the adjustable member comprises a pivot member that rotates the electronic circuit (or audio signal output device) away from the audio signal output device (or electronic circuit) to increase the separation distance. In any event, increasing the separation distance between the audio signal output device and the electronic circuit decreases the EMI proximate the audio signal output device, and therefore EMI effects on external circuits proximate the mobile station, such as a hearing aid.

  • Publication number: 20050243000
Abstract: Selectively engaged antenna matching for a mobile terminal. Antenna matching can be engaged, disengaged, or switched as needed depending on whether a movable cover or clam-shell portion of a mobile terminal is open or closed. A switch can connect a single matching network to a radiating element in one case, and disconnect the single matching network from the radiating element in the other case. Alternatively, the switch can connect one matching network to the radiating element to achieve one matched condition, and the other matching network to the radiating element to achieve the other matched condition. In other embodiments, a switchable matching arrangement can alter the signal and/or ground feed points of an antenna. The technique can be applied to planar, fixed external, or collapsible antennas.

  • Patent number: 6903686
Abstract: A conductive element with a primary branch and a secondary branch are separated by a bend segment and the signal and ground feeds are positioned adjacent each other on a common portion of the conductive element. The frequencies in the high band may be at least about twice that of the frequencies in the low band. The branches and bend segment are constructed such that the primary branch radiates at both high and low band operation. The two branches combine to form a more efficient high band radiator.

  • Patent number: 6198943
Abstract: An internal, loop dipole antenna for a mobile terminal is capable of operating in two distinct RF bands. The antenna includes a resonating element and a parasitic tuning element. The resonating element has a looped, dipole configuration including a primary tuning loop, a secondary tuning loop, and a ground loop. The parasitic tuning element is disposed in a plane spaced from the plane of the resonating element. The parasitic element includes a first portion that generally follows the ground loop on the resonating element, and a second portion that bisects the primary tuning loop on the resonating element. First and second tuning arms extend along opposing ends of the parasitic tuning element. The length of the tuning arms is adjusted to tune the resonance of the antenna in the primary and secondary operating bands.

  • Patent number: 5995052
Abstract: An antenna for a communication device including a first flip having an antenna element and pivotally mounted on a housing to move from a closed position adjacent to the housing to an operational position angularly space from the housing. A second flip having a conductive element as a ground plane is pivotally mounted on the housing and moves between a closed position adjacent the housing and an open position angularly spaced from both the housing and the first flip. When the first and second flips are in the closed position, they cover the controls and no antenna is exposed on the exterior of the housing. In the operational position, the antenna element and the conductive element form an antenna optimally tuned to the frequency of the wireless network that is less subject to interference by the user.

  • Patent number: 5923305
Abstract: Antenna systems for transmitting and receiving electrical signals in two widely separated frequency bands are provided which comprise a helix antenna and a parasitic element which is adjacent to the helix antenna. The parasitic element is positioned so that when radio frequency energy in the higher of the frequency bands is incident on the antenna system, the helix antenna and the parasitic element are capacitively coupled, while when radio frequency energy in the lower of the frequency bands is incident on the antenna system, the helix antenna is substantially isolated from the parasitic element. The effective aperture of the antenna system is preferably substantially the same in both of the frequency bands of operation, and the parasitic element may be positioned either inside or outside of the helix antenna, and may be parallel to the major-axis of the helix, or alternatively, may be positioned diagonally so as to only be adjacent to two or more windings of the helix antenna.
