  • Publication number: 20040052235
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a formatter, a method of formatting encoded symbols and a wireless communication system employing the same. In one embodiment, the formatter includes a symbol generator that provides a plurality of encoded symbols from a bit stream. The formatter also includes a symbol mapping organizer that maps the plurality of encoded symbols into information cells, each having a unique space coordinate, time coordinate and degree of freedom within a frequency band. The information cells are arranged in a parallelopiped communication resource volume.

  • Publication number: 20030104784
Abstract: A method and apparatus for assigning the data rate and/or power level to the mobile terminals without determining the highest theoretical system throughput, and without determining the highest weighted system throughput. An order is imposed on the terminals and the data rate and/or power covariance matrices are assigned such that the data rates of the terminals having a lower index in the order will not be decreased due to the presence of the terminals having a higher index in the order, and this is accomplished without changing the power covariance matrixes of the antennas involved in the communication with the lower index terminals. Thus, the assignment is made to the terminals based on the terminals requirements without regard to the interference introduced by the terminals with a higher index in the order since this interference will be compensated for by the compensation technique when the compensation technique process the terminals in accordance with the order.

  • Publication number: 20020142723
Abstract: A method and apparatus for increasing the capacity of a multiple-input and/or multiple-output system. Each sub-stream of a primary data stream is stratified to produce a processed sub-stream whose strata can be separated out and decoded with an acceptable error rate. A sub-stream can be stratified by dividing it into a plurality of sub-stream-components that are processed to obtain strata, with each stratum representing one of the sub-stream-components. The strata are then combined to obtain the processed sub-stream. Stratifying allows a particular processed sub-stream's strata have different transmit features from each other, such as different bit rates, or different power levels, or both. This reduces the interference for some of the strata of each processed sub-stream since as stratum are separated out and decoded they are no longer interference for the other strata. Thus, allowing for a higher overall bit rate for the processed sub-streams.

  • Publication number: 20020118770
Abstract: When using four transmit antennas, conventional channel coding is employed for a decoupled space-time coding approach for each of a number, L, of data substreams derived from the overall source bit stream. The symbols of the data substreams, after any encoding, are processed and the resulting derivatives of the encoded data substreams, which includes at least the complex conjugate of one of the encoded symbols, are grouped to form four transmit time sequences each one spanning L symbol periods which form a transmission matrix B. Each row of the matrix corresponds to an antenna, and the elements of each row represent the samples of a temporal sequence that is emitted by the antenna in L symbol periods.

  • Patent number: 5276730
Abstract: A method of providing local autonomous control of channel allocation of a cellular telecommunications network. In one prior art method, which can be identified as the timid method, a channel is selected for use by an incoming user if it is not being used by any of the cells which surround it. Otherwise, another channel is selected according to the same rule. The channels are tested in random order and a call is blocked if all of the channels are in use. For heavy loading, because of the vagaries of the way the demand for channels occurs, this method can result in inefficient channel deployment. In another method, which can be identified as the aggressive method, a channel is selected for use by an incoming user even if that channel is currently being used in the surrounding cells. If the channel is in use, the incoming user "bumps" the current user off the channel in the timid mode. The "bumped" user is then forced to find and use another channel.

  • Patent number: 4800555
Abstract: The present invention relates to a technique for repelling carriers in a Frequency Division Multiplexed (FDM) lightwave communication system to minimize mutual interference between signals. The system comprises a plurality of transceivers (20), each comprising a transmitter section (30) and a receiver section (40) which is coupled to a separate user of the system on one side, and on the other side to a lightwave communication arrangement (21-23) that interconnects the plurality of transceivers. Each of the transmitter sections of the system uses a separate carrier (10-14) for transmitting an associated users' information signal, and, during each sequential test cycle period, slowly dithers this carrier in random order to a first nearby frequency (50), on one side of the nominal carrier frequency, and then to a second nearby frequency (51) on the other side of the nominal carrier frequency.

  • Patent number: 4703474
Abstract: The present invention relates to a lightwave communication system, and associated transmitters (13) and receivers (14), which uses both spread spectrum, code-division-multiple-access (SS-CDMA), and wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) techniques for 2-way transmissions over a lightwave waveguide arrangement (11) to use the overall spectrum of the waveguide arrangement (11) while providing sufficient interference rejection of randomly spaced carriers, and associated signals, which may drift into the bandwidth of transmissions of other transmitter/receiver pairs due to instabilities in carrier laser sources (20). Techniques are also disclosed for a transceiver (10.sub.i) acquiring a 2-way link with another transceiver (10.sub.j), while other transmitter/receiver pairs are concurrently communicating using WDM, SS-CDMA, signal transmissions.

  • Patent number: 4631734
Abstract: The present invention relates to a cross-polarization equalizer/canceler which simultaneously performs cross-polarization equalization/cancellation in a tapped delay line (TDL) matrix. More particularly, the present equalizer/canceler receives the first and second orthogonally polarized digital signals on separate paths which are each split into a straight through and cross-over paths that include a TDL matrix comprising a separate TDL, with a predetermined number of complex taps, in each of the paths. The individual complex taps are appropriately adjusted in response to control signals from a tap adjusting means which derives the appropriate control signals from current tap signals and computed gradients derived from a predetermined algorithm. Accurate data decisions, however, are not needed.
