  • Patent number: 3993177
Abstract: The overrunning clutch retainer includes circumferentially spaced crossbars extending between longitudinally spaced rims with the rims and crossbars defining pockets sufficiently large to contain a plurality of rollers such as trunnion ended rollers. A flexible spring associated with each of the crossbars is adapted to contact the nearest roller in the pocket and urge the contacted roller circumferentially toward lockup. The contacted roller presses against the roller next to it and so on.The retainer and roller assembly is placed in the annular space between an outer member and an inner member of less outside diameter than the inside diameter of the outer member. The outer member is provided with cam surfaces. The retainer is provided with stops which are adapted to prevent rotation of the retainer with respect to the outer member in the unlocking or overrunning direction.

  • Patent number: 3937311
Abstract: This is an overrunning roller clutch, including a biasing member for urging rollers to lock or unlock the clutch depending on the direction of relative rotation of the clutch rotatable members, one of which is cylindrical while the other has cam surfaces. The biasing member generates axial forces on at least one of the rollers. These axial forces acting on the key rollers cause the entire roller complement to move into or out of the engaged position depending upon the relative rotation of the shaft and outer member.

  • Patent number: 3937312
Abstract: The retainer is entirely made of resilient molded plastic. A plurality of molded plastic bars interconnect a pair of axially spaced rims. A molded plastic spring is connected to each of a plurality of the bars at a point adjacent one rim. The springs extend angularly from said one rim toward the other rim.The rims, bars, and springs are one integral molded plastic unit.
