  • Patent number: 6183369
Abstract: A cross member unit for universal joints has a cross member (6) with four arms (17). Each opposing two arms (17) define a common longitudinal axis 7. A bearing bush (9) is provided per arm (17) which covers the arm (17). Rolling contact members (29), in the form of a ring, are arranged in the intermediate space between the casing (23) of the bearing bush (9) and the cylindrical running face (19) of the arm (17). A preseal (38) is arranged towards the open end (27) of the bearing bush (9) between the arms (17) and the casing (23). To achieve a high running performance and a static sealing effect, the preseal (38), in its bore (40), is provided with beads (41, 42) which are firmly positioned on the seat portion (22) of the arm (17).

Abstract: Cross member units for universal joints have a cross member (6) with four arms (17). Each two opposing arms define a common longitudinal axis (7). A bearing bush (9), covering the arm (17), is provided per arm (17). In the space between the casing (25) of the bearing bush (9) and the cylindrical running face (19) of the arm (17), rolling contact members (32) are arranged in the form of a rim. Towards the open end (30) of the bearing bush (9), a preseal (44) and main seal (37) are arranged between the arms (17) and the casing (25). To achieve a high running performance and a maintenance-free assembly for storing lubricating grease, the arms (17) include a storage chamber (20) which is open towards its end face (18) and otherwise closed. The chamber is tapered, starting from the end face (18). Furthermore, the main seal (37) is secured to the bearing bush (9) by means of an externally positioned carrier (39) which projects beyond the open end of the bearing bush (9).

  • Patent number: 5259689
Abstract: The invention relates to component connecting fastener especially flange connecting fasteners for the propeller shaft in a motor vehicle. The two flanges 4, 5 contain bores 8, 9 which align with each other. Axially slotted tensioning sleeve 10 is introduced into each bore 8, 9. The tensioning sleeve 10 is axially elongated and radially expanded by tensioning pin 22 driven into bore 12. After completion of the assembly operation, contact face 17 provided at collar 16 is supported on contact face 18 of flange 4, with supporting face 20 being supported on abutment face 21 of further flange 5. In this way it is possible to automate the assembly procedure while requiring less space and achieving a higher compression between flanges 4, 5.

  • Patent number: 4834691
Abstract: In a universal joint a device is provided for sealing an annular gap between a laterally closed bearing bush of the joint and a pin on a spider located within the bush. A plurality of cylindrically shaped bearing members are located within the annular gap in the bearing bush with an annular stop plate positioned at the ends of the bearing members facing the open end of the bush. A combination support member and sealing member is located in the annular gap with parts of the support member extending through the sealing member for supporting the stop plate. The sealing member is spaced from the stop plate. The support member divides the sealing member into a first part located between the support member and the pin, and a second part located between the support member and the inside wall of the bearing bush.

  • Patent number: 4276759
Abstract: In a centered double joint, a centering device interconnects a first single joint to a second single joint. The centering device includes a pin extending axially outwardly from one of the single joints. An intermediate element is fitted onto and laterally encircles the pin with its radially outer surface fitted into the interior of a journal extending axially outwardly from the other single joint. A gasket laterally encircles an axially extending portion of the pin and of the journal and is in sealed engagement with each of them. A shaped reinforcing ring is tightly attached to the end of the gasket secured to the pin and seats against the adjacent end face of the intermediate element.

  • Patent number: 4185475
Abstract: A universal joint assembly having an inner and an outer joint member with torque transmitting means therebetween is formed with a drive shaft attached to the inner joint member within an axially slotted bevelled end portion formed on an extension of the inner joint member. The inner member has threaded means formed on a cylindrical outer wall thereof and by threaded engagement of a nut about the end of the inner member extension, the drive shaft is releasably engaged and clamped in the inner joint member in a manner facilitating this assembly. The outer wall of the inner joint member is also formed with a recess within which one side of a sealing boot may be secured.
