Patent number: 5468831Abstract: A one-package primerless structural adhesive is disclosed that is particularly well suited for adhering one or more substrates of fiber-reinforced plastics. This adhesive uses dicyandiamide, its substituted derivatives, or melamine as the principal curative. A polyisocyanate prepolymer is made from various polyols reacted with polyisocyanates. In the absence of moisture, the curative and polyisocyanate can coexist in a single package without reacting for periods of time in excess of four months. Upon heating the adhesive to 150.degree. Patent number: 5223584Abstract: The present invention provides a composite material comprised of a matrix polymer and a reinforcing polymer, called a rigid rod polymer, which is well dispersed in the matrix polymer. This material displays enhanced mechanical properties. The matrix polymer is preferably cured resin, preferably epoxy resin. The rigid rod polymer may be made from polyazomethines, polyimides or polycarbodimides, or mixtures thereof. Preferably, the reinforcing polymer is a polyazomethine. The invention also relates to a method for making the composite material. The composite material is preferably made by first dissolving the rigid rod polymer precursors in the matrix polymer precursors, then polymerizing the rigid rod polymer precursors in-situ and then polymerizing the matrix polymer precursors, in-situ. The coating composition comprises a blocked polyurethane prepolymer, a coreactive crosslinking agent, and a compatible silicone oil. The blocked polyurethane is desirably made from a hydroxyl terminated hydrogenated diene polymer or polyolefin, which is reacted with excess equivalents of a polyisocyanate reactant and the isocyanate groups blocked with a blocking agent. The molding compounds, which can optionally contain mineral fillers such as chopped glass fiber, are generally based upon unsaturated polyester resins having a high percentage of hydroxyl end groups, polymerizable vinyl compounds such as styrene, and the like. The thickened compositions are tack-free and compression moldable after less than one day, typically after less than several hours, into permanently shaped, strong rigid articles, such as automotive body parts. For example, a graft of maleic anhydride on liquid butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer is copolymerized with epsilon-caprolactam using an anionic lactam polymerization catalyst (a lactamate salt) like the reaction product of ethyl magnesium bromide and epsilon-caprolactam. The present invention may be useful in a RIM (Reaction Injection Molding) process. The resulting polyamides have improved impact strength and water resistance.
