  • Patent number: 5181257
Abstract: A system and method for determining register differences between the images making up a multi-color printed image. A color video camera with macro optics scans at least a part of the image. The video image is processed to derive a plurality of single-color images, information from which is stored in respective single color memories. A register-checking location is selected having a contour in the printed image which has at least two superimposed single colors. The information in the color memories is processed to determine separation contours for the respective colors. Offsets are determined for the contours in the respective image memories as a measure of register differences between the images.

  • Patent number: 5170711
Abstract: The values ascertained from printer's copies (8, 9), for ink zone presetting, are supplied to a color supply detection computer (3) via a film/plate scanner (4). Before the various scanning areas in accordance with scanning patterns (7) are summed up, the zonal preset values ascertained by the ink supply detection computer (3) undergo a correction in accordance with the value furnished by a weighting computer (16) for each scanning area. This optimizes the presetting of the ink zones. As a function of the corrected values taking the subject to be printed into account, ductor rollers (22) and rubber rollers (21) can be controlled in order to improve the ink penetration as a function of the subject in the circumferential direction as well.

  • Patent number: 4660470
Abstract: As ink is conveyed through the inking unit of a printing machine, a state of equilibrium occurs which ensures adequate inking of the printing plate during continuous printing. The equilibrium state includes different ink gradients for the respective printing zones superimposed on a uniform base level. In order to achieve the state of equilibrium rapidly and easily at the start of printing, an ink distribution is produced in the inking unit before printing closely matching the state of equilibrium for continuous printing. An accurately defined ink film distribution is initially fed to the inking unit rollers via the vibrator. Preferably, when the ink applicator rollers are thrown off of the plate cylinder and the sheet feed is off, a predetermined amount of ink is introduced to the inking unit. The vibrator is then shut off and the base level of ink is allowed to become uniformly distributed. Next the ink profile is set at the ink metering elements and the vibrator is turned on.

  • Patent number: 4620481
Abstract: In an inking unit, the ink is taken in metered quantities from an ink reservoir and distributed by inking rollers to form an ink film adapted to be applied by ink applicator rollers to a printing plate. To avoid mottling, an ink applicator roller is moved axially in the phase of a machine cycle during which the ink applicator roller is not in engagement with the printing plate. During the ink application, on the other hand, the ink applicator roller performs either no axial movement or only a slight axial movement. This avoids an undesirable increase of the size of the screen dots and improves the print quality.

  • Patent number: 4596183
Abstract: A force or movement sensor is disposed on or proximate to an impression cylinder of a sheet-fed printing machine in order to sense the printing pressure. The sensor is sampled in synchronism with the rotation of the impression cylinder and the feeding of the sheets in order to detect a first pressure signal when pressure is applied to the fed sheets, and to detect a second pressure signal when the impression cylinder is relieved of the printing pressure. The differential value of the first and second pressure signals is displayed as an output or is evaluated by a pressure control system. As a result, static and quasi-static disturbances are suppressed. The mesurement is not affected by wear of the cylinder bearings or journals, variations in machine speed, and zero-point shift in the sensor and its associated electronics. These disturbances are further suppressed by averaging or accumulating samples over sample intervals and over a number of revolutions of the impression cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4586148
Abstract: A machine for scanning printing plates to determine the ratio of "printing" to "non-printing" area for pre-adjustment of the ink dosing elements of a printing machine has an array of electronic photo-sensors, each sensor being disposed in a channel having low-reflection chambers which permit sharp delimination of resolution elements on the printing plate and ensure high definition scanning of different types of printing plates under practical conditions. Preferably the diaphragms dividing the channel into chambers have greater spacing at greater distances from the element sensed on the printing plate. To accommodate printing plates of different materials, means are provided for selecting the wave length of the light source. To prevent measurement error due to changes in the distance from the printing plate to the light source and sensor array, the photosensor array is preferably directed or aimed 60.degree. to 45.degree.
