  • Publication number: 20130148513
Abstract: Packet traffic profiling models are created based on packet headers of a packet flow at a first model aggregation level to obtain first flow information describing packet-oriented parameters of the flow. A machine learning algorithm (MLA) creates a first model based on the first information, determines if the first model achieves a first confidence level, and if not, defines multiple flow slices in the packet flow. Flow slices at a second higher model aggregation level are processed to obtain second flow information describing flow slice-oriented parameters of the packet flow, and an MLA creates a second model based on the second information to determine if the second model achieves a second confidence level. If so, the process completes; if not, further processing continues at a next level. One of the models is selected for profiling packet traffic flows.

  • Patent number: 8446832
Abstract: A method and network node for dynamically controlling throughput over an air interface between a mobile terminal and a radio telecommunication system. The method detects a type of service being utilized by the mobile terminal, and dynamically selects a target delay for the traffic between a base station and the mobile terminal. The detecting may be done by a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) engine implemented in a core network node such as a Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). When the mobile terminal activates a delay-sensitive service, the target delay is dynamically changed to a smaller value to reduce latency. When the mobile terminal deactivates all delay-sensitive services, the target delay is dynamically changed to a larger value to increase throughput.

  • Publication number: 20130107715
Abstract: This disclosure relates a method within a network node and a corresponding network node for determining input information for creation of a data traffic clustering model. The method comprises obtaining data descriptors of data flows, wherein the data descriptors describe data of the data flows, and obtaining flow information of the data flows. In addition, the method comprises determining clustering model input information based on the obtained data descriptors and the obtained flow information. One exemplary advantage of the present disclosure is that it allows traffic clustering based solely on packet header information, making the present disclosure appropriate for handling encrypted traffic.

  • Publication number: 20120281590
Abstract: Multiple packet traffic profiling models are created from known packet traffic flows that are labeled, where a label is an actual value of a factor influencing one or more characteristics of the known packet traffic flow. Features, which are different from the factors, are measured for each flow. Flow clusters are defined from the labeled traffic flows by processing their features and labels. The profiling models are created based on cluster information. When an unknown packet flow is received, the multiple packet traffic profiling models are evaluated according to a confidence and a completeness associated with each of the packet traffic profiling models. The packet traffic profiling model with a predetermined confidence and completeness is selected and applied to profile the unknown packet traffic flow.

  • Patent number: 8203948
Abstract: There is provided a en edge node and a method of controlling session admission in a communications network. The method comprises measuring a Quality of Service parameter between an edge node and a corresponding edge node and, on the basis of the measured Quality of Service parameter, calculating a target window size. The target window size relates to the maximum rate of data that can be sent from the edge node to the corresponding edge node while retaining a predetermined Quality of Service. A current window size is determined on the basis of existing established sessions between the two edge nodes. When a request for session admission is received, the current window size is compared with the target window size and, on the basis of the comparison, a determination is made whether to admit the request for session admission.

  • Publication number: 20120106338
Abstract: A system, method, and network node for dynamically controlling throughput over an air interface between a mobile terminal and a radio telecommunication system. A Gateway GPRS Service Node (GGSN) receives a plurality of traffic flows for the mobile terminal and uses a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) module to determine a target delay class for each traffic flow. The GGSN signals the target delay class of each traffic flow to a Radio Network Controller (RNC) utilizing per-packet marking within a single radio access bearer (RAB). The RNC defines a separate virtual queue for each delay class on a per-RAB basis, and instructs a Node B serving the mobile terminal to do the same. The Node B services the queues according to packet transmission delays associated with each queue. A flow control mechanism in the Node B sets a packet queue length for each queue to optimize transmission performance.

  • Publication number: 20090245129
Abstract: A method and arrangement for controlling call admissions to a path in a packet-switched network. A restriction factor is determined on the basis of a load condition on the path as defined by indicators such as jitter and packet loss. The restriction factor is adjusted based on a previous load condition and a current load condition. By determining the load primarily based on measured jitter, the arrangement reacts to congestion proactively before experiencing packet loss. The arrangement may be implemented entirely in an edge node of the network, and thus does not require additional mechanisms within the network such as signaling and resource reservation.
