    Abstract: A method and apparatus for the laser machining of an unfinished object into a cutting tool with a cutting edge and a free surface. A laser generates laser beam impulses which are directed by a redirecting arrangement onto a surface of the unfinished object. An impulse reaches an impact location on the surface of the unfinished object under an inclination angle between the laser beam direction (R) of the impulse and the surface to be formed. The redirecting arrangement is controlled so that the laser beam impulses impact at adjacent impact locations and form a pulse zone. With a positioning arrangement a relative movement between the pulse zone and the unfinished object of predetermined speed is established so that the pulse zone formed by the impact locations moves along the surface of the unfinished object and an ablation layer of a layer thickness (dS) is removed with each contour pass.

    Abstract: An edge sensor for a moving web of material includes an elongated light source on which is mounted a receiver containing an active receiver element made of a plastics material with light-absorbing properties. The receiver element comprises an elongated light input surface and at least one light exist on which a light detector is provided. The receiver element is an elongated hollow body made of a light-absorbing plastics material which is supported directly in the receiver in such a way that is light input surface is directly exposed to the light from the light source which falls on the web. A hollow body which is, or can be made, self-supporting directly and without accessories results in a simpler structure and optimal use of light. The hollow body is particularly suitable for use in the tube supports of a standard commercial fluorescent tube housing.

    Abstract: A process and device for determining the location of at least one edge of a moving web within a measurement zone and in which a linear array of liquid crystal light modulators is interposed between a light source and a light receiver extending transversely to the edge along a scanning zone while a controller successively activates the light modulators to scan a transparent surface zone along the measurement zone. The point at which light is last received (because of obstruction by the edge) or the first received in a pass (because of lack of obstruction by the edge) at the receiver from the source through the scanning transparent zone is used as the measure of the location of the edge.

    Abstract: Identification marks in the form of code fields are arranged on a material band which is adapted to be moved in a continuous manner. These identification marks are recognized by a reader head with a subsequent evaluating logic, whereby under conditions of signal flow produced by the reader head on passing of the code field at the evaluating logic, this signal flow is transformed into identification marking corresponding to the respective code field. Each code field is preceded by a starter label which produces a start signal causing the release of the initially blocked signal flow between the reader head and the evaluating logic and actuates a switch component to assume a transmitting condition. On completion of the signal flow transformation into the identification marking, the signal flow ceases due to actuation of the switch component.

    Abstract: A control system is used in combination with a tilt-box arrangement for controlling the transverse displacement of a web and having a stationary support frame and a roller frame pivotal on the support frame about a frame axis and carrying at least one roller rotatable about a roller axis transverse to the frame axis. The web is engaged over the roller and moves in a transport direction transverse to the frame axis and to the roller axis. A drive is connected between the support and roller frames and operates to pivotally displace the roller frame in opposite angular directions from a center position with the roll axis perpendicular to the transport direction toward respective end positions and thereby laterally deflect the web engaged by the roller.
