  • Patent number: 5311672
Abstract: A paper making machine comprises a press followed by an adjoining dry end having a plurality of dryer groups I to VI. Each dryer group comprises only one row of dryer cylinders and one row of reversal suction rolls which alternate with the dryer cylinders, and a respective endless support belt passing around the cylinders and rolls of each group along a guided meander path. The press and each of the dryer groups has a respective variable web speed drive. A speed control device controls the drives such that a positive difference in speed is present between the first dryer group and the press and a negative difference in speed is present between the last two dryer groups. Separation places may be defined between at least some of the dryer groups. Some of the separation places are closed providing support for the web passing between groups, and others are open providing an unsupported open draw for the web.

  • Patent number: 5295311
Abstract: A dryer section of a machine for manufacturing fiber webs, which includes a plurality of heatable drying cylinders arranged to form at least a first dryer group and a second dryer group, and arranged in horizontal cylinder rows, and including a plurality of suction rolls each being disposed between two adjacent cylinders. The cylinders of the first group have axes disposed in a first plane I, the suction rolls of the first group have axes disposed in a second plane II, the cylinders of the second group have axes disposed in a third plane III, and the suction rolls of the second group have axes disposed in a fourth plane IV. In accordance with different embodiments planes I and II may be coplanar, planes II and III may be coplanar; planes I and III may be disposed between planes II and IV; and the axes of the first drying cylinders and its associated suction roll of the second group may be disposed below the axes of the other drying cylinders and suction rolls of the second group.

  • Patent number: 5232554
Abstract: The dry end of a paper making machine includes a twin wire dryer group following a single wire dryer group. The paper web is continuously guided by a support belt which moves alternately between dryer cylinders and intermediate deflecting rolls in the single wire dryer group. In the twin wire dryer group, the web travels over open lengths between dryer cylinders in the two rows of the second group. A rope guide threads the web into the twin wire dryer group. The start of the rope guide, called the rope shears, is in the vicinity of the periphery of the last or next to last deflecting roll called the selected deflecting roll in the single wire dryer group. Between the selected deflecting roll at the start of the rope shears and the preceding selected dryer cylinder, there is a relatively long straight path of travel for the support belt. Parallel to that path, there is a scraper and a guide plate which deflects the edge strip of the web laterally into the rope shears which is laterally to the side of the web.

  • Patent number: 5184408
Abstract: A dryer section with two dryer groups and a transfer for the paper web between the dryer groups. The receiving dryer group has a vacuum roll on which the felt of the proceeding dryer group is partially wrapped. An adjusting mechanism enables the wrap angle to be adjusted between an arc angle of 0 and 20 degrees.

  • Patent number: 5020242
Abstract: A guide roll for a porous belt, for instance for the drying wire of a paper machine, is described. A perforated roll shell rotates about a stationary air guide box. The guide box has two air chambers which extend across the length of the guide roll. One air chamber serves the discharge of blowing air and the other air chamber serves the intake and removal of suction air. Contained between the air guide box and the roll shell is an annular space in which a blowing zone and a suction zone are defined by longitudinal seals. Considering that blowing air and suction air may have different temperatures, the two air chambers of the air guide box are movable axially relative to each other.

  • Patent number: 5012594
Abstract: A web drying unit, e.g. for a paper making machine, has several drying cylinders, over which a web to be dried can pass, and also several guide rolls for at least one endless supporting belt for pressing the web to be dried against the drying cylinders. Only some of the drying cylinders are provided with a drive gear connected by gears to a drive pinion, the gears being disposed inside a gear housing, which is also used to house cylinder journal pins for the drive motor. At least one of the guide rolls is also provided with a drive gear, which is connected to a drive gear of the drying cylinder. A gear housing also contains the drive gear of the guide roller and its bearing on the drive side. Only one common drive is needed for the unit, and uniform ventilation conditions are enabled to occur over the cross-direction of the paper web. To ensure no obstruction to maintenance personnel on the drive side of the unit, the drive pinion is disposed in the upper region of the gear housing.

  • Patent number: 4735689
Abstract: Apparatus for introducing a felt belt into the press section of a paper making machine. The endless loop belt is supported on a pair of support bars or, in an alternate embodiment, on a single support bar, which are provided on a frame comprised of two side parts held together by the support bars. Both of the support bars are located outside the belt loop. The belt loop is pulled up and draped over one or both of the support bars defining one or more folded regions of the belt at one or both of the support bars, which shortens the suspended length of the belt. A clamping device, typically secured to the side parts of the frame, clamps the folded region of the belt to the support bar while the belt is introduced into the press section. After the belt has been introduced into the press section, the device including its frame is unclamped from the folded regions of the belt and removed from the machine.

  • Patent number: 4698918
Abstract: A backing screen runs together with the paper web through the drying section of a paper machine. The backing screen bridges the space between the press section and the drying section. For threading the so-called transfer strip through the drying section there is a rope carrier provided whose ropes run outside the paper web width. Prior to its insertion at the entrance point of the rope carrier, the transfer strip, which is separated from the backing screen, is passed across a mechanical guide element which, sideways and from the outside, can be moved into the area of the backing screen and back again. The mechanical guide element is movable so that the space between the guide element and the backing screen is variable.

  • Patent number: 4686778
Abstract: A narrow guide belt runs in the edge area of the paper web width across the drying cylinder of a paper machine and serves to thread the transfer strip through the drying cylinder section. On each drying cylinder, about in the center of the looping zone formed by the guide belt on the drying cylinder, two or three guide belt pulleys are so arranged that the belt will for a short distance lift off the cylinder. The pulleys can be swiveled in a position spaced from the drying cylinder where the guide belt lifts entirely off the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4000035
Abstract: A paper-making machine has a plurality of drying cylinders for removing moisture from a wet web. The drying cylinders are arranged so that some of them are located in an upper plane and are hollow and have their interior connected to a source of suction, and others are located in a lower plane and are heated to form contact heaters. An endless traveling carrier band is trained about these cylinders in such a manner that its one surface which carries the wet web faces away from the hollow cylinders as it travels about them and faces towards the heated cylinders as it travels about the latter.
