    Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition for use in treating a condition of the lower gastrointestinal tract, e.g. ulcerative colitis, wherein the composition comprises: a) a carrier comprising: a1) water in an amount of more than 10% to 30% by weight of the carrier; and a2) monoacylglycerol lipid in an amount of 70% to 90% by weight of the carrier, wherein the monoacylglycerol lipid comprises monolinolein or monoolein, or combinations thereof; and b) a pharmaceutically active agent, wherein the composition forms a lipid cubic phase at a temperature of 36° C. to 39° C. The composition is particularly suitable for rectal administration, for example, as an enema. Also disclosed is a composition, methods for preparing the compositions, and kits for making the compositions.
