  • Patent number: 4459964
Abstract: A fuel supply apparatus for internal combustion engines having a fuel injection pump for supplying a regulatable fuel injection quantity, a ventilation apparatus of the fuel injection pump, a fuel quantity meter and exhaust gas recirculation in accordance with fuel quantity. In the ventilation or overflow line for the pump interior pressure, there is a ventilation valve which responds at least when the pump interior pressure has attained a pressure value which results at an engine rpm outside the exhaust gas test range. In this case, the overflow line of the fuel injection pump is connected with the fuel supply container. At a lower rpm which is within the exhaust gas test range, the ventilation valve may be switched such that a connection is established with the pump inflow downstream of the fuel quantity meter. The ventilation valve may also be embodied as a magnetic valve which is actuated by pressure switches exposed to the pump interior pressure.

  • Patent number: 4426980
Abstract: A device is proposed for drift compensation in fuel metering systems, in which it is not the metered quantity as such which is controlled in closed-loop fashion, but rather only the position of a quantity-determining member. The object of the invention is to maintain or re-obtain the original association between the fuel quantity and the position signal of the quantity-determining member for the purpose of providing a correct indication of the load state existing at a particular time. The drift compensation is intended to be capable of being performed manually, semi-automatically, or automatically, in an additive and/or multiplicative manner. It can furthermore be realized via a preferably rpm-dependent characteristic curve. The various values may be ascertained, for instance, in connection with running-out and running-up tests.

  • Patent number: 4392352
Abstract: A method and an apparatus are proposed for regulating and attaining an anti-overload means in turbochargers and in internal combustion engines equipped therewith, serving in cost-favorable embodiment both in Otto (gasoline) engines and in Diesel engines to limit the air throughput of the engine in accordance with the engine speed and to provide that neither the turbocharger, as a result of exceeding its limit rpm, nor the engine can be endangered if the engine exceeds the permissible compression and combustion pressure. In summary, the intent is to attain a favorable adjustment of the exhaust turbocharger over the entire rpm range of the internal combustion engine. To this end, the exhaust gas quantity delivered to the exhaust turbocharger is controlled in accordance with the throughput, that is, in accordance with the air quantity delivered to the engine, with the aid of a bypass line.

  • Patent number: 4380900
Abstract: An apparatus is described for the removal of solid components from the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines, in particular for the removal of soot components from the exhaust gases of self-igniting combustion engines. Under the influence of electrostatic fields, the solid components are diverted and carried to a fresh-air current flowing toward the intake side of the engine. This recirculation of the solid components may be effected either by means of the recirculation of a partial flow of the exhaust gas which has been enriched with solid components, in which case the solid components are deflected into this partial flow in an electrostatic field, or these solid components may be guided into the fresh-air current aspirated by the engine, in this case with the cooperation of a mechanical transport means and electrostatic bonding forces.

  • Patent number: 4362050
Abstract: A fuel injection nozzle is proposed, intended in particular for Diesel engines, in which an induction coil is installed in an intermediate disc. The coil core is embodied by a pressure element and a valve needle in force-locking contact therewith. An annular permanent magnet is secured either on the pressure bolt or on the intermediate plate. This embodiment of an injection nozzle, as a so-called needle stroke transducer, is used when it is desired to ascertain the duration of injection and especially the onset of injection.

  • Patent number: 4359991
Abstract: A fuel control system for an internal combustion engine with correction for optimum values based on a variety of factors. Characteristic engine data is stored in preferably digital memories with capabilities for interpolation. Upon addressing the engine data fields with input signals related to current operational variables, for example the accelerator pedal position, the control system derives therefrom a nominal air flow rate which is used as the reference value in a control loop that sets the amount of recycled exhaust gas and the fresh air flow. As the actual air flow rate approaches the reference value, the fuel flow is adjusted to insure correct mixtures at all times. In another embodiment, the fuel is supplied on demand but cannot exceed a maximum value except under special override conditions. Several other embodiments and variants are presented.

  • Patent number: 4348998
Abstract: A fuel injection pump for an internal combustion engine including a low pressure sump and a sump piston, reciprocating in a cylinder, for imparting elevated pressure to the fuel for delivery to injection valves. The pressure chamber in the pump cylinder can be opened to the sump at some adjustable point of the piston stroke to limit fuel delivery. A secondary conduit between the pressure chamber and the sump includes a flow throttle that variably restricts the return flow of fuel as adjusted by fluid pressure which is regulated by a secondary fuel control mechanism. This mechanism is subject to closed-loop control via an air flow rate meter disposed in the induction tube and also acts as a limiting stop for the baffle plate of the air flow rate meter.

  • Patent number: 4300515
Abstract: An apparatus is proposed which serves the purpose of load-dependent actuation of an adjustment device, wherein the cross section and/or the pressure drop of an exhaust recirculation line in an internal combustion engine can be varied in accordance with load. An injection pump of conventional design is associated with the internal combustion engine and further includes a quantity adjustment device, the position of which acts as a control variable for the load. With this control variable, a booster apparatus is controlled via a comparison apparatus; the output variable of the booster apparatus in turn is the control variable for the actuation of an adjustment device which acts on an exhaust recirculation control apparatus. When a threshold value for load is exceeded, the exhaust recirculation is precluded. The control variable is preferably formed as a fuel pressure signal with the fuel withdrawn from the suction chamber of the injection pump.

  • Patent number: 4230080
Abstract: A device for exhaust gas recycling is proposed which controls the amount of recycled exhaust gas in an internal combustion engine equipped with an injection unit so that a certain air factor is attained. The device comprises a closing element for the exhaust gas return conduit, which latter terminates into the intake manifold, this closing element being suitably constituted by a throttle valve and being directly connected to the adjusting lever or control rod of the injection pump. If this connection is established via a resilient linkage between the adjusting lever and the exhaust gas return valve, then the thus-recycled amount of exhaust gas can be dimensioned so that a specific quantity of recycled exhaust gas is associated with a specific angular position of the adjusting lever.

  • Patent number: 4228773
Abstract: A device which serves to activate an adjusting member in dependence on load, in which especially the cross section and/or the pressure differential of an exhaust gas return line which is provided in the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine can be altered in dependence on the load. A fuel injection pump of a known construction is associated with the internal combustion engine, and includes a rate adjusting element, the position of which serves as the control value for the load. • Patent number: 4223654
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a Diesel engine by limiting the amount of fuel to be admitted to the engine in dependence on engine speed and on the air mass flow rate. The invention provides a primary set of stored data interrelating these variables. The primary data set is used to generate a set-point value for the position of a movable stop member which limits the mechanical travel of the fuel control rack in the fuel injection pump; the control rack is also subject to the action of a mechanical speed governor. Additional corrections of the maximum amount of fuel are made on the basis of air temperature and fuel temperature. Still further refinements include taking into account exhaust gas temperature and engine starting conditions. The final corrected set-point signal is then compared with the output from a position indicator which is attached to the stop member.
