  • Patent number: 6379462
Abstract: A metering system for the coating of webs of paper and cardboard uses a doctor bar received in an elastic bed which is urged toward the surface to be coated by a pressurizable bladder subdivided into compartments. An elastic continuous member between the diaphragm and the bed equalizes the pressure so that sudden changes in pressure in the regions between the compartments are eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6066208
Abstract: An apparatus for applying a coating liquid to a web moving continuously along a path has a main frame forming an open space and a main backing roller journaled on the main frame and around which the web passes. A second frame in the space is independent of the main frame and displaceable relative thereto from a position in the space juxtaposed with the backing roller. An applicator unit on the second frame applies an excess of the coating liquid to the web and a dosing unit downstream along the path from the applicator unit strips from the web excess coating liquid and leaves on the web a coating of the liquid of a predetermined thickness.

  • Patent number: 5766350
Abstract: In a web-coating apparatus a web moving continuously in a travel direction passes in a contact arc partially around a cylindrical surface of a backing roller centered on an axis. An applicator system has an applicator roller extending parallel to the backing roller, having a smooth cylindrical outer surface, and forming a gap with the backing roller. The web passes through the gap. A substantially stationary support extends generally parallel to the backing roll axis across a full width of the web and a pusher element limitedly movable generally radially toward and away from the backing-roller axis on the support bears radially of the backing-roller axis on the applicator roller along the full width of the web. An inflatable hose between the pusher element and the support along the full width of the web urges the element and applicator roller toward the backing roller. A coating liquid is supplied to the gap across the full width of the web.

  • Patent number: 5632814
Abstract: For the application of a coating material onto a running material web, particularly a paper or cardboard web, a cylinder guides the web of material while a dosing element extends over the work width and has a surface which together with the cylinder forms an application gap converging in the travel direction of the web. In order to be able to apply various coating materials at high web speeds evenly and without disturbances, even at low application weights, the dosing element is supported swingably about an axis parallel to the cylinder, the radius of its surface guiding the coating material increases continuously in the travel direction of the web up to the dosing line and the surface ends at the dosing line with an edge whose radius is less than 8 mm.

  • Patent number: 4706603
Abstract: A coating apparatus for fabric webs carried along a counter roll includes an applicator which accomodates a chamber containing coating color to be applied onto the fabric web. The chamber is defined by spaced doctor blade and overflow plate and dam elements laterally sealing the chamber. For preventing a coating of the web along its edges, separate doctor assemblies are provided which are controlled independently of the dam plates.

  • Patent number: 4558658
Abstract: A device for coating a continuous web that travels over a back-up roll. The force of application can be adjusted. The coating material is applied to the web with a slotted applicator pipe. The pipe extends over the width of the web and has a preliminary coating-material flow-regulating gap. The width of the gap can be adjusted. A coating-material flow-regulating lip and a return lip adjoin the gap in such a way as to constitute a coating-material flow-regulating chamber extending over the width of the web. The flow-regulating lip is a doctor bed and has a doctor batten that moves with little friction along at least one overflow-side slide face. The face of the doctor batten toward the web that is being coated is rectangular and demarcates in conjunction with the web a narrowing wedge-shaped gap with a geometry that depends on the degree of contact pressure. The overflow edge of the face is a straight and sharp stripping edge. The face and stripping edge of the doctor batten are flexible.

  • Patent number: 4553498
Abstract: A device for unilaterally clamping an elastic doctor blade into a cutting beam. The tension of the blade is varied in relation to a web of material that is to be coated and that runs over a mating roll. The doctor blade rests against the web of material along a doctor line parallel to the cutting beam. The blade is rigidly supported in its midsection along a line of support that is in fixed position with respect to the web of material parallel to the doctor line. The lower edge of the doctor blade can be displaced with respect to the plane of the doctor line and the line of support. The doctor blade is positioned in a longitudinal recess in the cutting beam. The doctor blade is clamped into the longitudinal recess against an elastic resistance in the cutting beam by means of an elastic pressure-medium hose. The lower edge of the doctor blade is guided toward the line of support when displaced out of the plane of the doctor line and the line of support.

  • Patent number: 4434941
Abstract: A system for the axial feed of air to one of two air nozzles (7, 7) which together are rotatable about a longitudinal center axis (4), comprising a housing (6) having a pair of stationary air feed ducts (10, 11) each of the ducts terminating in a thrusting surface (19) perpendicular to the longitudinal center axis of the air nozzle, a gasket retainer (21) spaced from the thrusting surface, a compressible gasket (20) between the thrusting surface and the gasket retainer, and a rotatable hollow journal (23) for carrying the air nozzles at its downstream end and at its upstream end being pressed against the gasket retainer.

  • Patent number: 4417540
Abstract: In an apparatus for the continuous, uniform coating with a liquid coating material of a web passing over a counter roll, comprising an air-nozzle arrangement for the removal of excess coating material and the smoothing of the coating, said air-nozzle arrangement being rotatable about its longitudinal center axis, being disposed adjacent to the counter roll and comprising two slot nozzles disposed symmetrically about its longitudinal center axis and displaced 180 degrees relative to each other, each nozzle extending at least over the width of the web, and the two lips of each nozzle being seated on nozzle-lip holders mounted on the casing of the air-nozzle arrangement, the improvement which comprises imparting to the nozzle-lip holders an angular construction and mounting them on the casing in such a way that they can be positioned and adjusted in the direction of the nozzle-slot width; one of the nozzle-lip holders being of smaller cross section over its angled area than the other nozzle-lip holder; the nozzl
