  • Patent number: 5267540
Abstract: The invention is directed to a pull-rope starter for an internal combustion engine of a portable handheld work apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw, cutoff machine or the like. The work apparatus has a housing defining cooling air openings for conducting cooling air and the pull-rope starter includes a rope disc rotatably journalled in the housing in the region of the cooling air openings. A carrier is disposed adjacent the rope disc and seated in the housing so as to close a space in the housing for accommodating a spiral spring mounted on the carrier. The carrier is so configured that its outer periphery is greater than the rope disc. The carrier has a wall section on its side facing toward the rope disc and this wall section extends essentially over the width of the rope slot and over essentially the entire periphery of the rope disc.

  • Patent number: 4893410
Abstract: The invention is directed to a cutterhead for attachment to a vegetation cutting apparatus. The cutterhead has a housing with a spool on which a coil of cutting filament is wound. The cutting filament is paid out in incremental lengths when its ends effective for cutting are worn. This is achieved with an incremental rotation of the spool while the cutterhead rotates. For this purpose, the filament coil must have a winding rotation corresponding to the direction of rotation of the cutterhead. So that the cutterhead can be utilized for oppositely directed rotations as desired, the spool can be turned over through 180.degree. and can be blocked and released in both positions by means of a switching member to provide the incremental rotation. The spool can be seated on the switching member and its position, when installed, is determined by means of a marking which is applied to the adapter nut and to the spool. The adapter nut serves to tighten the cutterhead onto the vegetation cutting apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4866846
Abstract: The cutterhead includes a cutting filament wound on a spool and this cutting filament is adjusted with respect to its effective cutting length in dependence upon the rotational speed of the cutterhead. The switching point for the automatic feed must be precisely matched to the drive speed in order that the desired effective cutting length is maintained. In order to assure the desired effective cutting length, a spring is provided which is adjustable with respect to its biasing force by means of an easily accessible adjusting member. This biasing force is matched to the speed-dependent centrifugal force such that the spool is released at a predetermined speed of the cutterhead.

  • Patent number: 4864728
Abstract: A brushcutter has a guide wand with a drive head rotatably mounted thereon. A motor rotatably drives the drive head and a cutting head for cutting vegetation is mounted on the drive head and defines a rotational plane. A protective arrangement partially overlaps the cutting tool in the region of the rotational plane and has a downwardly extending wall. A detachable skirt extends from the wall downwardly so as to terminate at an elevation beneath the rotational plane and deflects stones and other hard objects caught by the cutting tool thereby protecting an operator of the brushcutter against injury.

  • Patent number: 4761939
Abstract: A brushcutter has a supporting tube having a first end and a second end with a drive motor arranged at the first end and a cutterhead mounted on the second end. A handle is mounted on the supporting tube for manipulating the brushcutter. The handle has a tubular-shaped handle portion which can be attached to the supporting tube without first disassembling the latter from the motor or the cutterhead. This is achieved configuring the tubular-shaped handle portion to be made of two clamshells which conjointly define a partition plane in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the supporting tube. One of the clamshells holds all control components and is directly mounted on the supporting tube by means of a pipe clamp. The other clamshell is laterally attached to the first clamshell.

  • Patent number: 4696108
Abstract: The invention is directed to a pruning apparatus having a drive motor which is mounted on a carrier adapted for mounting on the back of an operator. The drive motor is connected with a rotating cutting tool by means of a flexible shaft. The flexible shaft includes an output member and a drive member. The output member is connected to a drive motor and is contained in a connecting tube. The output member is connected via a coupling unit to the drive member which is disposed in a guide tube. The guide tube carries the rotating cutting tool which produces a smooth cut so that the formation of fungus at the cut is completely eliminated. A cover plate is affixed to the guide tube so as to be adjacent to the cutting tool and has an outer diameter smaller than the cutting circle defined by the tip of the rotating cutting tool. While operating the apparatus, the stationary cover plate, unlike the rotating cutting tool, remains clearly visible thereby facilitating a precise cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 4690252
Abstract: A locking device is disclosed to prevent a rotatably journalled part of a portable tool from rotating. The locking device includes a blocking element which coacts with the rotatably journalled part for blocking the rotation thereof. The blocking element is disposed on the tool and can be shifted from a clear position permitting rotation into a blocking position preventing rotation. In the latter position, the blocking element is braced against the tool. Thus, the blocking element is always present on the tool and is available for use at any time. The blocking element does not need to be held manually in the blocking position because it is supported on the tool.

  • Patent number: 4662158
Abstract: The invention is directed to a starter arrangement for a brushcutter which is driven by an engine mounted in a housing and secured to the one end of a carrying tube. A shaft accommodated in the carrying tube couples the engine to a transmission of a cutting tool provided at the other end of the carrying tube. The drive shaft is operatively connected with the starter arrangement which includes a starter grip. The starter grip is provided on the carrying tube within convenient reach of the operator. The brushcutter is suspended from the shoulder during use and can be started simply and readily by the operator without having to first take off the brushcutter or otherwise change its position.

  • Patent number: 4651421
Abstract: A cutterhead is disclosed for a motor-driven vegetation cutter and has a rotating housing and a spool journalled therein on which a cutting filament is wound. The spool has a plurality of cams, which coact with at least two spring-loaded coupling members pivotally mounted on the housing for paying out the cutting filament in incremental lengths. Each of the coupling members is pivotally journalled on its own pivot mount on the housing such that it is pivotable in dependence upon centrifugal force. The pivotable coupling members are synchronously displaceable and are coupled to one another for this purpose via an intermediate ring which is supported on the housing so as to be freely rotatable with respect thereto.

  • Patent number: 4529099
Abstract: The invention is directed to a threaded closure for a fuel tank and includes a thread formed on a fuel inlet stub of the tank. A closure cap has a thread for engaging the thread on the inlet stub. A latch member is arranged on the closure cap and includes a peripheral ring which is mounted on the base body of the closure cap so as to be axially journalled thereon for movement between an unlatched position whereat a handle of the peripheral ring projects beyond the upper surface of the base body to facilitate manually grasping the closure cap and for providing a visual indication that the latch member is in the unlatched position. The peripheral ring includes a toothing formed on the inner wall surface thereof for engaging the toothing formed on the outer wall surface of the inlet stub when the latch member is in the latched position thereby preventing an unintended rotation of the closure cap. Also, in the latched position, the handle is recessed in a recess formed in the base body of the cap.
