  • Patent number: 4814116
Abstract: A method for manufacturing optical fiber cable in which at least one light waveguide, either alone or as a bundle forming a core, is loosely inserted into an outer sheath with a definite length allocation between the length of the core and sheath characterized by passing the cable around a deflection roller and varying the diameter of the deflection roller to obtain the desired length allocation between the sheath and core.

  • Patent number: 4728470
Abstract: A device for further processing a product which has a stranded element of at least one light waveguide or fiber loosely received in an envelope or sheath which was applied by an extruder, including two tempering chambers arranged in a line of feed from the last extruder with each chamber having at least one storage disk mounted for rotation therein.

  • Patent number: 4726750
Abstract: A device for encasing a rope-like strand containing one or more light waveguides, which device includes two extruders situated one after the other characterized by a fluid cooling device positioned between the two extruders for applying a cooling fluid to the external surface of a first layer applied by the first extruder to cool it prior to extruding a second layer thereon. The cooling device enables increasing the rate of travel of the rope-like strand during the extruding operation.

  • Patent number: 4689943
Abstract: A pay-out stand for supply reels utilized in manufacturing cables particularly light waveguide cables having a basket-like structure mounted for rotation around a horizontal axis with carrier members extending parallel to the axis adjacent the periphery of the basket-like members. The supply reels are situated on the inside of each carrier part, preferably in pairs, and the carrier parts are spaced so that access of the supply reels can be had from the outside of the stand to enable splicing the lead from a backup reel to a waveguide of a feed reel which is feeding a lead out of the pay-out stand.

  • Patent number: 4541686
Abstract: A cable construction having a cable core of elements saturated with a filling material and surrounded by a barrier film which is surrounded by an outer sheath characterized by the inner surface of the barrier film having sub-areas containing an adhesive material with the remaining sub-areas being free of the adhesive layer. In one embodiment, an armored layer is interposed between the barrier film and the cable core and an outer adhesive layer is interposed between the barrier film and the outer sheath.

  • Patent number: 4458476
Abstract: A method and device for manufacturing optical transmission elements which contains a SZ-stranded bundle of several optical waveguides received in a tubular jacket characterized by stranding the waveguides into the bundle while they are moving in a vertical direction, applying a filling material to the waveguides adjacent a stranding point to prevent the unstranding of the bundle until at least the tubular jacket has been applied. Preferably, the application of the jacket is by extruding the jacket onto the bundle and the method can include the application of an additional filling material to complete the filling of the jacket.

  • Patent number: 4414165
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming an optical transmission element having a fiber shaped optical waveguide loosely received in a tubular jacket containing a filling material characterized by introducing a fiber into a jacket as it is being extruded at an elevated temperature, cooling the jacket and fiber to a second temperature below said elevated temperature and above the ambient temperature, coiling the cooled jacket into a coil arrangement and while coiling controlling the rate of introduction of the fiber into the jacket so that the fiber lies on the inner diameter of each radius of curvature of the coil with the amount of retardation of the introduction and the amount of the second temperature above room temperature being arranged so that upon cooling to room temperature, the fiber has the desired length relationship to the length of the jacket.

  • Patent number: 4318588
Abstract: An optical communication cable is comprised of one or more optical transmission elements loosely positioned within a double-layer synthetic material wrapping. A spun covering composed of elongated (50 to 200 mm) intertwined or unintertwined fibers at least partial coated with an adhesive is positioned about the wrapping. A relatively soft outer casing composed of a synthetic material having a modulus of elasticity smaller than 500 N/mm.sup.2 is bonded onto the spun covering via the adhesive layer. Such cable construction provides improved flexibility and mechanical stability.
