  • Patent number: 12656427
Abstract: A thermal switch for thermally shorting the first and second stage of a cold head during early stages of cooldown of an MRI magnet for reducing the total cooldown time is disclosed. The thermal switch provides a thermal connection between the first and second stage of the cold head, and so the thermal shield and the cold mass are cooled down with the higher power of the first stage of the cold head while the overall temperature is greater than a threshold temperature. When the temperature drops below the threshold, the thermal connection becomes disconnected and then the cold mass is connected thermally only to the second stage, and the first stage remains connected to the thermal shield but isolated from the cold mass. This disconnection may be achieved passively, such as differential thermal contraction between cooling contacts and a support structure made from a different material.

  • Publication number: 20260092994
Abstract: A persistent current switch and method for fast ramping of an MRI system is provided. The persistent current switch wire is distributed in at least one layer over a bobbin. Each of the layers of the persistent current switch wire is in contact with at least one thermally conductive cooling surface. The cooling surface cools the persistent current switch wire to the threshold temperature for a superconducting state. The method includes distributing the persistent current switch wire in at least one layer over a bobbin. Each of the layers of the persistent current switch wire is in contact with at least one thermally conductive cooling surface and the cooling surface cools the persistent current switch wire to a superconducting state.

  • Publication number: 20250306146
Abstract: A system and method for rapid ramping of an MRI magnet. The system includes a cooling source for the magnet, a persistent current switch and a variable thermal link connecting the persistent current switch and cooling source. The thermal link provides a low thermal conductance connection from the cooling source to the persistent current switch while the magnet is ramping and a high thermal conductance connection for rapid cooling of the persistent current switch when the magnet reaches a target current corresponding to a target magnetic field. The method includes connecting a thermal link to a persistent current switch and a cooling source of the magnet, providing a low thermal conductance connection through the thermal link from the cooling source to the persistent current switch while the MRI magnet is ramping and a high thermal conductance connection when the MRI magnet has reached a target current corresponding to a target magnetic field, thereby providing a rapid cooling of the persistent current switch.

  • Patent number: 11977138
Abstract: Some implementations provide an MRI system that includes: a housing having a bore accommodating a portion of a subject; a main magnet enclosed by said housing and configured to generate a substantially uniform magnet field within the bore; a gradient sub-system to provide perturbations to the substantially uniform magnet field; a flexible coil assembly configured to (i) receive radio frequency (RF) signals from the subject in response to the portion of the subject being scanned, and (ii) generate and apply B0 shimming to improve a field homogeneity of the substantially uniform magnetic field; and a control unit configured to: drive the gradient sub-system using a gradient waveform; and receive measurement results responsive to the gradient waveform such that a coupling between the gradient sub-system and the flexible coil assembly is determined and subsequently reduced in response to the determined coupling exceeding a pre-determined threshold.

  • Patent number: 11802923
Abstract: Systems and methods for imaging a subject with a magnetic resonance imaging system using magnetic field gradients generated by one or more gradient coils operating with gradient coil settings, such as gradient amplitudes and gradient slew rates, above a threshold at which peripheral nerve stimulation is likely to be induced in the subject. A dielectric assembly is positioned adjacent a skin surface of the subject such that the dielectric assembly attenuates the local electric fields induced by the magnetic field gradients, which would be likely to induce PNS when the dielectric assembly is not arranged adjacent the skin surface of the subject. As a result of the dielectric assembly placed adjacent the skin surface of the subject, the gradient coil settings can be increased above the threshold without inducing PNS in the subject.
