  • Patent number: 4999906
Abstract: An electrochemical cell comprising a negative electrode whose electrochemically active material includes an intermetallic compound which can form a hydride with hydrogen, the cell comprising an electrolyte of a solution of at least one alkali hydroxide in water, the negative electrode being provided with a discharge buffer by introducing a quantity of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or aluminium into the cell before the cell is sealed, the quantity corresponding to the desired quantity of hydrogen in the negative electrode in the uncharged condition of the cell.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 16, 1990
Date of Patent: March 19, 1991
    Assignee: U.S. Philips Corporation

  • Patent number: 4939342
Abstract: An electric steam iron includes a sole plate maintained at a temperature of about 200.degree. C. by an about 800 watt electric heating element and provided with apertures for conveying steam to a surface to be ironed from a single flooded steam chamber on the iron maintained at about 100.degree. C. by an about 1200 watt electric heating element through a steam tube connecting the chamber to the apertures. The article being ironed is heated continuously by the the condensation of the steam to water in the article thereby increasing heat transfer to the article, with the article being subsequently dried by the heat produced by the sole plate, which heat is at least equal to the heat of evaporation of the condensed water. The sole plate and chamber may be thermally connected to compensate for heat losses from the chamber to the environment.

  • Patent number: 4783384
Abstract: Electrochemical cell comprising at least one electrode consisting of a substrate made of porous material which is impregnated with an electrochemically active material, highly efficient and high-speed gas reactions occurring at the electrode because of the fact that the substrate is impregnated in accordance with a pattern such that a portion of substrate surfaces contains free metal.

  • Patent number: 4702978
Abstract: The invention relates to an electrochemical cell having a negative electrode of a stable hydride-forming material, in which a high power density at a low temperature is obtained by adding from 5 to 45% by weight of LaNi.sub.5 or a comparable high-capacity material having a higher plateau pressure than that of the stable hydride-forming material.

  • Patent number: 4207614
Abstract: A magnetic bubble shift register store having a plate of magnetic material whose preferred magnetization direction extends transverse to the plane of the plate and in which bubbles are situated, said plate having two separate, elongated generally parallel extending continuous bubble paths, of lower bubble energy in comparison with the vicinity; the center lines of said paths being situated at a distance from each other which is at least equal to the mean bubble diameter. The 0-bits of written information to be transported and stored are represented by bubbles in the one path, while the 1-bits thereof are represented by bubbles in the other path. The interaction between the bubbles ensures that bubbles in the two paths cannot pass each other, with the result that the information represented by the bubbles can be unambiguously transported and maintained in the path direction.

  • Patent number: 3958211
Abstract: A source of magnetic bubbles comprises a plate of magnetic material which is situated in a principal magnetic field directed transverse to the plate, a loop conductor having an inner side and an outer side which are defined as such and in which alternately directed current pulses can be generated, and also comprising a first and a second preferred structure. The preferred structures project as far as inside the loop conductor. On the first preferred structure a magnetic bubble remains which, under the influence of a first current pulse in the loop conductor which attenuates the magnetic field, expands such that the second preferred structure is also covered.
