    Abstract: A system and method for querying an on board diagnostic system of a vehicle includes a processor, a port in communication with the processor and an input device in communication with the processor. The port is configured to communicate with the on board diagnostic system of a vehicle. The input device is configured to receive a vehicle identification number of the vehicle. The processor is configured to determine protocol utilized by the vehicle based on the vehicle identification number of the vehicle and the data in a database which contains data to identify the protocol the vehicle utilizes. After a determination of the protocol utilized by the vehicle is performed, the processor is further configured to communicate with the vehicle using the protocol previously identified.
