  • Patent number: 7478844
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars. Threaded connections are machined into pre-expanded ends of tubulars. Once the threaded connections are machined into the pre-expanded ends, two joints of tubulars are connected using the threads, thus creating a pre-expanded threaded connection. After a tubular string is made up and lowered into a wellbore, the entire length of the string is expanded using known methods for expanding tubulars. During the downhole expansion operation, the pre-expanded threaded connections experience minimal expansion. The minimal downhole expansion of the pre-expanded threaded connections allows the threaded connections to maintain their sealing ability and coupling strength.

  • Patent number: 7452007
Abstract: An expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars. The present invention utilizes two complementary thread segments. The first segment of the threaded connection utilizes standard box and pin threads. In the second segment of the threaded connection, material is removed from the stab flank of the pin threads to reduce the standard width of the pin threads, while the box threads of the second segment are standard thread width. The use of the reduced thread width in the pin threads of the second segment allows for a loose fit between the pin threads of the second segment and the box threads of the second segment. The loose fit between the pin and box threads of the second segment allows radial and axial movement between those threads without causing disengagement of the threaded connection during the expansion process.

  • Patent number: 6971685
Abstract: An expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars that provides multiple sealing points along the pin and box members that can withstand high pressure is disclosed. The present invention utilizes a gap that is created between the pin nose and the back of the box member when the threaded connection is made up and a reverse trapping angle machined into the pin nose end and the back of the box. The radial expansion of the tubulars causes axial movement of the pin nose and the box member until the pin nose is in contact with the back of the box member, thereby closing the gap and forcing the pin nose into sealing engagement with the back of the box member. The reverse trapping angle forces the nose of the pin member outwardly (i.e., toward the outer diameter of the expandable tubular string) as it is forced into contact with the back of the box member during the expansion process.

  • Patent number: 6767035
Abstract: A threaded pipe connection having box and pin members is provided with inner engageable thread means on the box and pin members, the thread means including a helical dove-tail thread having negative flank angles extending along the lengths of the box and pin members, and a helical intermediate thread having positive flank angles extending along the lengths of the box and pin members adjacent the dove-tail thread. Upon makeup, the intermediate threads generate hoop tension in the box member and hoop compression in the pin member, and the dove-tail threads generate hoop compression in the box member and hoop tension in the pin member.
