  • Patent number: 5738468
Abstract: A shim for use in a metal cutting tool comprised of a tool holder and a double sided cutting insert. The insert has rake surfaces formed in the corners of upper and lower surfaces of the insert with a recess formed in the corners. The shim is used to retain the insert in the tool holder. The shim has a shape and lateral dimensions substantially corresponding to the insert. The shim has at least one projection which mates with the recess. When the insert and shim are clamped in the tool holder, the projection adjacent an operative pair of insert cutting edges bears against the walls of the associated recess, effectively supporting the insert in this region. This results in the inoperative lower cutting edges being spaced from the shim.

  • Patent number: 5702210
Abstract: A metal cutting tool comprising a tool holder and a double sided cutting insert is disclosed. The insert has rake surfaces formed in the corners of upper and lower surfaces of the insert with a recess formed in the corners. The insert is retained by the tool holder via a shim, substantially corresponding in shape and lateral dimensions to the insert. The shim has a projection which mates with the recess. When the insert and shim are clamped in the tool holder, the projection adjacent an operative pair of insert cutting edges bears against the walls of the associated recess, effectively supporting the insert in this region. This results in the inoperative lower cutting edges being spaced from the shim.

  • Patent number: 5695303
Abstract: A cutting insert for use in a cutting tool has upper, lower and side surfaces and at least one cutting edge formed at an intersection of the upper surface with the side surface thereof. A rake face of the insert is formed with an undulated chip forming groove extending along the cutting edge and comprising a succession of alternating depressed and raised portions. Each raised portion of the chip forming groove is formed with a truncated top portion of a width which is substantially less than a distance between two adjacent truncated top portions. The depressed and raised portions preferably extend, in the direction perpendicular to the cutting edge, along the entire width of the chip forming groove.

  • Patent number: 5688083
Abstract: A drilling tool having an elongated body with a longitudinal axis and provided with at least one insert receiving pocket and an indexable cutting insert for use with the drilling tool for performing drilling action is disclosed. The insert of the drilling tool includes a rake face, relief flank faces, a base, a plurality of cutting edges, each defined between the rake face and adjacent relief flank face and included between two adjacent cutting corners. Each cutting edge has at least one set of component cutting edges, each set having two pairs of component cutting edges merging in a common point, each pair comprising a first and a second component cutting edge merging via a bridging section directed towards a central line constituting or parallel to a median line of the insert and passing through the common point.

  • Patent number: 5226761
Abstract: A metal cutting insert for use in turning or drilling operations and having a rake surface and a pair of relief flanks merging in a nose of radius r and defining with the rake surface a pair of cutting edges; each cutting edge having a first portion of length 1 tangential with the corner, the first portion enclosing an angle .epsilon. and a second subsequent portion defining between them an angle .beta.; a chip former groove being formed in the rake surface adjacent the cutting edges and the nose. The cutting edge is positive in the region of the nose and the first portions and the chip former groove adjacent thereto have a first portion which slopes towards a base of the insert, any chip deflecting portion thereof being sufficiently spaced from the cutting edge to allow for chips to have reached a desired minimal length prior to their deflection.
