  • Patent number: 6214618
Abstract: There is provided a method of making microcarrier beads having the steps of forming a bead made of a lightly crosslinked styrene copolymer core and also having functional groups on the surface of the bead and washing the microcarrier beads with basic and acidic solutions to make the beads compatible for cell culture. Also provided is a microcarrier bead made of a styrene copolymer core with a tri-methylamine exterior which has been washed in basic and acidic solutions to make the beads compatible for cell culture. The method of using microcarrier beads for increased growth of anchorage dependent cells having the steps of washing the microcarrier bead with basic and acidic solutions and mixing the microcarrier bead with an anchorage dependent cell containing culture medium is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4323420
Abstract: An ICF target comprising a spherical pellet of fusion fuel surrounded by a concentric shell; and a process for manufacturing the same which includes the steps of forming hemispheric shells of a silicon or other substrate material, adhering the shell segments to each other with a fuel pellet contained concentrically therein, then separating the individual targets from the parent substrate. Formation of hemispheric cavities by deposition or coating of a mold substrate is also described. Coatings or membranes may also be applied to the interior of the hemispheric segments prior to joining.

  • Patent number: 4028941
Abstract: A method and apparatus for low temperature sensing which uses gas filled micro-size hollow glass spheres that are exposed in a confined observation area to a low temperature range (Kelvin) and observed microscopically to determine change of state, i.e., change from gaseous state of the contained gas to condensed state. By suitable indicia and classification of the spheres in the observation area, the temperature can be determined very accurately.

  • Patent number: 4016743
Abstract: A variable leak gas source and a method for obtaining the same which includes filling a quantity of hollow glass micro-spheres with a gas, storing said quantity in a confined chamber having a controllable outlet, heating said chamber above room temperature, and controlling the temperature of said chamber to control the quantity of gas passing out of said controllable outlet. Individual gas filled spheres may be utilized for calibration purposes by breaking a sphere having a known quantity of a known gas to calibrate a gas detection apparatus.
