Patent number: 5188773Abstract: Method of and apparatus for multi-phase contact utilizing louvered structured packing. The packing is provided in corrugated sheets and between the fold lines of the corrugations; a plurality of large louvered openings are disposed in generally parallel spaced relationship. An array of small louvers is disposed between the large louvers. Each of the louvers is oriented for selectively vectoring a liquid-liquid or liquid-vapor around and through the corrugated sheets when disposed within a process tower.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1991Date of Patent: February 23, 1993Assignee: Glitsch, Inc.Inventors: Gilbert K. Chen, Robert McKelvy, Jorge A. Bonilla, Don Glaspie, George De Bruyn

Patent number: 5051214Abstract: An improved liquid flow distributor assembly for a process column of the type wherein the distributor is positioned above a packing section for the distribution of liquid downwardly therethrough. The improvement comprises a plurality of distributor troughs constructed with a series of internal distributor channels having stilling plates depending therefrom. Each channel is constructed of a generally U-shaped cross section, aligned with and affixed to the distributor trough for providing primary liquid flow to intermediate regions thereof. In this manner, liquid gradients between opposite ends of the troughs are eliminated and a uniform quiescent liquid level is maintained.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1990Date of Patent: September 24, 1991Assignee: Glitsch, Inc.Inventors: Gilbert K. Chen, Adam T. Lee, Kuang-Yeu Wu, Gary W. Gage

Patent number: 4950430Abstract: Disclosed is a tower packing for vapor-liquid contact which includes a plurality of sheets of corrugated material, the sheets being arranged generally vertically and parallel to one another with the corrugations of adjacent sheets criss-crossing one another. The sheets are provided with a plurality of holes for effecting both liquid and vapor distribution in said packing, and the holes are arranged on the sheets with the horizontal spacing between adjacent holes being no greater than about five times the horizontal extent of a hole, and in no event greater than about 5 millimeters. The horizontal extent of the holes is no greater than about 2 millimeters.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1988Date of Patent: August 21, 1990Assignee: Glitsch, Inc.Inventors: Gilbert K. Chen, Michele Acerra

Patent number: 4427606Abstract: An improved vapor-liquid contact grid apparatus which maximizes the generation of small drops and which is inexpensive to manufacture and easy to construct is disclosed. The grid apparatus consists of multiple layered grids, each grid being formed of upright grid members and connectors. The grid members carry vanes, formed from the member itself by a process of slitting and bending, which vanes extend out into the region between the upright grid members, thus restricting vapor passage, providing drip points and increasing the effective surface area for gas-liquid exchange. The grid members and connectors are arranged in an "egg carton"-like fashion to provide a simple, yet sturdy, grid.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1982Date of Patent: January 24, 1984Assignee: Koch Engineering Company, Inc.Inventors: Gilbert K. Chen, Paul M. Nyberg, Matthew Buchholz

Patent number: 4374813Abstract: A reverse-jet scrubber apparatus and method for removing gaseous contaminants, such as sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter from a combustion gas stream, employing low energy and reduced amounts of scrubbing liquid, which apparatus comprises: an elongated conduit; and a plurality of jet-spray nozzles centrally disposed and spaced apart from each other in the conduit and adapted to spray under high pressure a caustic scrubbing liquid countercurrently into a high-velocity, combustion gas stream, to form separate spray scrubbing zones covering the cross-sectional area of the conduit, whereby a combustion gas stream is scrubbed and a clear gas stream is recovered downstream of the scrubbing zones.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1981Date of Patent: February 22, 1983Assignee: Koch Engineering Company, Inc.Inventors: Gilbert K. Chen, Timothy L. Holmes
