Abstract: Described is a thermal energy storage and delivery system for delivering thermal energy to both a passenger compartment of a vehicle and a component, such as a battery, located externally of the passenger compartment. The system capitalizes on excess capacity stored in a thermal energy storage apparatus, to heat the external component in addition to the passenger compartment.

Abstract: A preferred thermal energy storage and delivery unit includes a chamber for containing a phase change material and one or more air channel members which pass through the phase change material for conveying air into heat exchange relationship with the phase change material. The unit also includes a fluid circuit for conveying a thermal potential charging fluid, for example engine coolant or refrigerant, into heat exchange relationship with the phase change material. The unit optionally may include a fluid circuit through which engine coolant passes, and a fluid circuit through which refrigerant passes. In this manner, systems which incorporate the unit and selectively provide heated or cooled air to condition an interior vehicle space are provided. Also described are improved vehicular environmental conditioning systems which include a front HVAC unit and a rear thermal storage apparatus, and which are flexibly operated in a number of environmental conditioning and/or thermal storage modes.

Abstract: A thermal energy storage system is operable in heating capacity storage and discharge modes and cooling capacity storage and discharge modes for maintaining a temperature in a vehicle compartment. Each mode includes a thermal charging cycle and a thermal discharging cycle. The thermal energy storage system communicates with a vehicle air conditioning system including a compressor and a vehicle coolant system including a vehicle engine. The thermal energy storage system comprises a thermal storage apparatus housing thermal energy storage material that stores thermal energy. The thermal storage apparatus is connected to the air conditioning system and the coolant system so that a refrigerant or coolant flows through the thermal storage apparatus in heat transfer relationship with the thermal energy storage material.

Abstract: A vapor compression refrigeration system for providing cold storing which; during a conventional cycle provides cooling to an indoor heat exchanger in the conventional fashion, during a cooling charging cycle refrigeration effect is stored in a heat storage vessel by refrigerant evaporation with the indoor heat exchanger being by-passed and during a discharging cooling cycle refrigerant passes through the heat storage vessel without evaporation and evaporates in the indoor heat exchanger to provide space cooling.

Abstract: An encapsulation apparatus is provided for a thermal management system for at least one battery. The apparatus comprises a housing including an inner wall defining a receptacle for the battery. The inner wall is positioned in thermal contact with the battery. The housing further comprises an outer wall in spaced-apart relationship with the inner wall to define an enclosure therebetween for receiving a phase change material.
