  • Patent number: 10363717
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and systems increase converting accuracy and consistency of corrugated articles of manufacture such as blanks, intermediates or converted structures to minimize unintended gap variations, fishtail variations and visual discord as well as to minimize unintentional loss of strength due to conversion of such articles. The constitution of converted articles formed from a corrugated board blanks according to the invention comprises at least one intelligently located score, slit or slot (hereinafter collectively “registered modification”) based upon knowledge of the corrugated board's fluted medium, including the absolute relative location of at least one fluted medium feature and/or the fluted medium geometry, such as its pitch.

  • Patent number: 10328654
Abstract: A system and method for producing a board product made from paper products that have embossed medium that features an improved structural profile. The improved structural profile may include a triangular flute pattern wherein each flute may exhibit a first linear leg support and a second linear leg support that each support a center apex structure. The apex may have a substantially flat portion that is configured to engage a facing. As such, the board product may further include one or more facings that are adhesively coupled to the embossed medium. Further, the apex of each “triangle” may also have a groove or channel for receiving an adhesive in a continuous and uniform manner.

  • Publication number: 20180015695
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for making scored mediums, particularly but not exclusively for use in the corrugated board arts, and articles of manufacture and compositions made there with and made there by. When at least one scored medium is used in a layered or laminated article, and particularly when selectively used as a liner member and/or fluted member in a corrugated board, whether as part of a corrugated board article of manufacture or a laminate with at least one other member, the article will possess mechanical qualities superior to those that would otherwise exist if a non-scored medium was/were used. To achieve these desired qualities, a major axis of the scores formed in the scored medium runs askew, and preferably perpendicular, to the direction of beam strength in any article or article intermediate to which the scored medium is to be associated.

  • Publication number: 20170305103
Abstract: A system and method for producing a board product characterized by having two corrugated mediums and at least one embossed medium in the board product. The board product may further include one or more facings that are adhesively coupled to either the corrugated medium, the embossed medium, or both. Generally speaking, a corrugated medium may be characterized as a paper product that exhibits flutes induced by a cross-corrugating process such that the induced flutes are perpendicular (or at least not congruent) with the machine direction of the paper product. An embossed medium may be characterized as a paper product that exhibits flutes induced by a linear-embossing process such that the induced flutes are aligned with the machine direction of the paper product. A resultant board product is stronger and more efficiently produced because of the linearly-embossed medium harnessing the natural strength of the paper in the machine direction.

  • Publication number: 20170305099
Abstract: A system and method for producing a board product made from paper products that have a pre-scored facing in addition to a medium (sometimes called fluting). Conventional corrugated board may feature a cross-corrugated medium and one or more facing that have no score lines that are imprinted (at least prior to assembly with the corrugated medium). Such a conventional board product may be inferior because any score lines that are imprinted will damage the underlying corrugated medium in some manner. A breakdown in the strength of the underlying medium leads to poor precision when the eventual board product is scored, cut, and bent. A lack of precision in folding a board product is known as fishtailing as any articulated portion of the board product may not maintain a precise plane of articulation when bent. Hence, the articulated portion “fishtails” out of alignment. Having precisely located impression lines in register to underlying flutes of a medium ensures correct and precise articulation.

  • Publication number: 20170274616
Abstract: A system and method for inducing fluting in paper aligned in a machine direction of the paper while the paper is being fed through the board-making machine in the machine direction. In an embodiment, a method of producing the medium for a board product includes unwinding paper from a paper roll in a machine direction that is naturally aligned with the machine direction of the paper. Then, an embossing or scoring stage embosses or scores the paper with fluting that is also aligned with the machine direction of the paper. The resultant fluted paper has flutes that are aligned with underlying fibers of the paper, thereby taking advantage of the natural strength of the aligned fibers in the machine direction of the paper. Further, embossing or scoring paper for fluting greatly reduces take-up when such a fluted medium is compared to a facing that may be combined with the fluting to yield a board product.

  • Patent number: 8092360
Abstract: Methods for making multi-walled containers from a single blank, preferably using a continuous process approach, and the resulting containers are disclosed. Various embodiments of the invention include, alone or in combination, intermediate panels formed from flap precursors that are in- or out-folded such that their distal ends are in proximate relationship to each other; outer flaps sized to overlap exposed edges of a container formed from the blank; stress relief features a joint corners to reduce stresses thereat. Methods for making select containers of the invention include folding and adhering the flap precursors to an inner panel, up-folding the inner panel/intermediate panel combination about a mandrel, and continuing to up-fold the outer panel until a container having a “use” position as a resting position is formed.
