  • Patent number: 11802444
Abstract: A bit for drilling a wellbore includes: a body; and a cutting face. The cutting face includes: an inner section and an outer section; a plurality of blades protruding from the body, and a row of superhard cutters mounted along each blade, the cutters in the inner section having a negative profile angle and the cutters in the outer section having a positive profile angle. At least one of: at least one inner cutter is oriented at a negative side rake angle to create a weight on bit (WOB) reducing effect, and at least one outer cutter is oriented at a positive side rake angle to create the WOB reducing effect. Each of the rest of the cutters are oriented at a side rake angle such that an overall effect of the side rake angles is the WOB reducing effect.

  • Publication number: 20210291276
Abstract: A method for repairing a drill bit includes: scanning the drill bit after manufacture thereof; comparing the scan to a design model of the drill bit to recognize one or more features of the drill bit, thereby generating a first model of the as-built drill bit; scanning the drill bit after drilling with the drill bit; comparing the scan of the used drill bit to the first model to recognize the features, thereby generating a second model of the used drill bit; simulating a plurality of repair strategies using the first and second models; and selecting one of the repair strategies by comparing results of the simulations.

  • Patent number: 10378281
Abstract: A bottomhole assembly includes: a drill bit operable to vibrate when engaged with a formation and rotated; and a suspension sub including: a stator barrel for connection to a pipe string; a traveler barrel for connection to the drill bit; a slip joint longitudinally coupling the traveler barrel to the stator barrel while allowing movement of the traveler barrel between an extended position and a retracted position; a torsional joint connecting the traveler barrel to the stator barrel at and between the positions; and one or more springs disposed between the stator barrel and the traveler barrel. The suspension is tuned relative to the drill bit to: dampen the vibration of the drill bit when the BHA is rotated at a first angular velocity; and resonate the vibration of the drill bit when the BHA is rotated at a second angular velocity, thereby imparting percussive energy to the drill bit.

  • Publication number: 20130239652
Abstract: A target cylinder, a method for testing a superhard component thereon, and a method for selecting an untested component for use in field applications. The target cylinder includes a first end, a second end, and a side wall extending from the first end to the second end. At least one of the second end and the sidewall is an exposed portion that makes contact with the superhard component to determine at least one property of the superhard component. The target cylinder is formed from a first material evenly distributed throughout a second material. Upon testing superhard components at one or more impact frequencies, untested superhard components are selected based upon field anticipated impact frequencies.
