Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for harnessing the wind energy generated by vehicles passing on a roadway. A roadway is provided with a trench extending from a surface of the roadway. The trench may be provided along an extended stretch of the roadway or as a discrete trench section spaced apart along the roadway. The trench or trench section may be provided near the middle of a lane making up the roadway such that a vehicle travelling on the roadway passes over the trench. In this manner the wind displaced by the passing vehicle is directed into the trench and experienced by a wind turbine or wind generator provided within the trench. The trench is covered by a structure configured to direct the displaced wind inside the trench. The wind turbine converts the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy that is then converted into useable power.
