  • Patent number: 10041855
Abstract: A system includes a substrate having a surface and a circuit with a plurality of conductive paths disposed adjacent (e.g., directly on or separated by a thin layer). The circuit is configured to detect an interruption or alteration of conduction of one or more of the plurality of conductive paths due to a flaw in the substrate. The circuit is further configured to identify the interrupted or altered one or more of the plurality of conductive paths based on one or more electrical characteristics of the circuit.

  • Publication number: 20170299554
Abstract: Systems and methods for non-destructive testing of specimens are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) includes an electro-permanent magnet (EPM) configured to controllably apply a biasing magnetic flux to a target location. The EPM includes a hard magnet, and a soft magnet at least partially enclosing the hard magnet. The EPM also includes a magnetizing coil having a plurality of turns at least partially encircling the soft magnet. The magnetizing coil is configured to controllably magnetically bias the soft magnet when a current is applied to the magnetizing coil.

  • Publication number: 20170226362
Abstract: Thin films of precious metals such as platinum and gold have the required ability to withstand high temperatures, but in pure form can suffer from grain growth, agglomeration and dewetting at high temperature. Grain boundaries must therefore be pinned by alloying with other metals and/or by inclusion of non-metallic nanoparticles. While such bulk materials are known in the prior art, they have not existed previously as printable inks that can be deposited by additive manufacturing direct-write methods. These materials have been formulated for the first time as alloy and composite inks so that they may be applied by direct-write additive manufacturing techniques directly onto three-dimensional components or on high temperature substrates that can be adhered to complex components.

  • Publication number: 20170131242
Abstract: A method of inspecting a pipe for flaws includes emitting ultrasonic waves, controlling the emission of the ultrasonic waves, receiving reflections of the ultrasonic waves, and determining at least one characteristic of one or more flaws. The ultrasonic waves are emitted in a helical pattern through the pipe from an array of ultrasonic transducer elements. The emission of the ultrasonic waves from the array is controlled such that the ultrasonic waves are emitted at a plurality of helical angles within a range of helical angles. The reflections of the ultrasonic waves are caused by impingement of the ultrasonic waves on the one or more flaws. The at least one characteristic of the one or more flaws is determined based on the received reflections of the ultrasonic waves.

  • Patent number: 9385448
Abstract: The systems, apparatus, and methods disclosed herein provide access to systems located within a closed structure, such that the systems are traditionally difficult for humans to access. Exemplary structures include an engine compartment, airplane wing, or fuselage. This access allows a system located within the structure to be electrically coupled with an electrical I/O device located outside the structure. Access to a system located within the closed structure is provided by way of a hole.

  • Publication number: 20160034663
Abstract: A healthcare and wellness management system, which can be used to collect and analyze data related to a user's health. Using software applications and sensors embedded on a hardware platform, the system collects psychological and physiological data regarding a subject such as mood or stress level, food intake, and vital signs. The system may generate a health parameter based on the collected data. The system may initiate actions based on the gathered data. Multiple users may be ranked relative to one another based on their health parameters.

  • Publication number: 20150359457
Abstract: A method is disclosed for foot sensors to be used to determine at least two characteristics of a subject's activity by using a combination of sensors for force and foot orientation/motion/position. A wearable footwear ecosystem is comprised of the subject's footwear, sensor-enabled insoles or insertable devices, in- or on-footwear electronics that is hard wired to the sensors and may contain additional sensors such as accelerometers, a master device and means to communicate (typically wirelessly) among the various sensor platforms, and the master device including clock synchronization. Correlating the time stamps for data among various sensors, and the master device communicating wirelessly is critical to accurate determination of the desired characteristics. Multiple force-sensitive resistors on a common substrate are individually optimized for dynamic range. Pulse sensors using arrays of such force-sensitive resistors are implemented.
