Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for on-demand application resource allocation. In accordance with the method of the invention, an anticipated workload can be compared to a measured capacity for an application cluster in one or more server computing nodes in a server farm. If the measured capacity warrants a re-configuration of the application clusters, a new placement can be computed for application server instances in individual ones of the server computing nodes. Subsequently, the new placement can be applied to the server computing nodes in the server farm. In this regard, the applying step can include starting and stopping selected ones of the application server instances in different ones of the server computing nodes to effectuate the new placement.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method, system, and computer program product for supporting a large number of intermittently used application clusters without consuming all the resources needed to run server processes for all the application clusters all the time. A method in accordance with the present invention comprises: holding an application request for a dormant application cluster in a holding zone; changing a status of the dormant application cluster to active; changing a status of an unused active application cluster to dormant; stopping server processes for the newly dormant application cluster; starting server processes for the newly active application cluster; and directing the application request held in the holding zone to the server processes for the newly active application cluster.

Abstract: Apparatus, systems and methods for service and/or business for coordinating tasks of performance management and application placement management in a dynamic fashion. An example process is dynamic in the face of fluctuations in the request load to the distributed computer system and the periodic adjustments to the placement of applications onto servers in said distributed computer system. There are two opposite functional flows in said process: a demand estimation function and a capacity adjustment function. The coordination system involves two subsystems: a demand estimator and a capacity adjuster, along with appropriate interfaces to of the performance manager and the application placement manager.

Abstract: A method of securely receiving data on a user's system from a web broadcast infrastructure with a plurality of channels. The method comprising receiving promotional metadata from a first web broadcast channel, the promotional metadata related to data available for reception; assembling at least part of the promotional metadata into a promotional offering for review by a user; selecting by a user, data to be received related to the promotional metadata; receiving data from a second web broadcast channel, the data selected from the promotional metadata, and wherein the data has been previously encrypted using a first encrypting key; and receiving the first decrypting key via a computer readable medium, the first decrypting key for decrypting at least some of the data received via the second web broadcast channel. In another embodiment, a method and system to transmit data securely from a web broadcast center is disclosed.

In one aspect, a method of monitoring the health of one or more application servers comprises the following steps. One or more health classes are specified, each of the one or more health classes defining one or more health policies for the one or more application servers. At least one of the one or more health policies is monitored. Violations, if any, of the one or more health policies are detected.

Abstract: A method of securely providing data to a user's system over a broadcast infrastructure. The method comprising the steps of: encrypting the data using a first encrypting key; encrypting a first decrypting key using a second encrypting key; dividing at least part of the encrypted data into a series of logical packages; placing at least some of the logical packages into a broadcast carousel for cyclical broadcast over the broadcast infrastructure; broadcasting the packages in broadcast carousel so that they can be received by at least one user's system, wherein the broadcast is cyclical and repeats periodically; and transferring the encrypted first decrypting key, which has been encrypted with the second encrypting key, to the user's system. In another embodiment, a system is disclosed to carry out the above method in a broadcast infrastructure and an image overlaid on top of a primary image being displayed isused to denote that additional logical packages are available for receipt by broadcast.

Abstract: This invention provides a system, a method and a computer readable medium having program code thereon for using a one-way digital broadcast medium to support interactive and personalized e-commerce applications. The broadcast data may include regular programming, e.g., a TV broadcast, and other supplemental data-streams. A set-top box receiving the transmission, demultiplexes the data streams and provides any additional data streams to personal devices that request to access the data streams. Users of these devices can then complete e-commerce and other interactive services using a secondary back channel, e.g., a cellular network, to connect back to the e-commerce provider.

Abstract: A performance management system and method for cluster-based web services comprising a gateway for receiving a user request, assigning the user request to a class, queuing the user request based on said class, and dispatching the user request to one of a plurality of server resources based on the assigned class and control parameters. The control parameters are continuously updated by a global resource manager which tracks and evaluates system performance.

Abstract: A system for providing persistent access control of protected content is disclosed. The method on a client system includes sending a first request for authentication of the client to a server system. Subsequently, the client is authenticated by the server. Next, a user on the client attempts to access a file comprising a trailer and content encrypted with an encrypting key. Then, a second request for access to the content is sent to the server by the client, wherein an identifier from the trailer is included in the second request. The identifier identifies the content or an access control policy of the content. The server determines that the second request is in accordance with an access control policy associated with the content, and grants access to the content. Lastly, the client accesses the content in accordance with the access control policy.

Abstract: A method for receiving digital content data on a user's system for playing or recording, the content data being compressed and encrypted with a first encrypting key, said method comprising the steps of: tuning a receiver to a selected frequency; receiving content data through a broadcast transmission at the selected frequency; assembling the content data that is received; and transferring the content data to a player for playing the content data after all the content data has been received. Abstract: A digital rights management (DRM) system and methodology for a Java client implementing a Java Runtime Environment (JRE). The JRE comprises a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and Java runtime libraries components and is capable of executing a player application for presenting content that can be presented through a Java program (e.g., a Java application, applet, servlet, bean, etc.) and downloaded from a content server to the client. The DRM system includes an acquisition component for receiving downloaded protected contents; and a dynamic rights management layer located between the JRE and player application for receiving requests to view or play downloaded protected contents from the player, and, in response to each request, determining the rights associated with protected content and enabling viewing or playing of the protected contents via the player application if permitted according to the rights.

Abstract: The present invention is a Web based operating system that provides general access to resources distributed throughout the Internet. It provides a graphical user interface through which users may perform common “desktop” operations, such as invoking applications, copying files, and setting sharing attributes of files, and translate them to the operations that are appropriate for the resources that are the target of the request. Additionally, the invention provides a general-purpose attribute store or registry to keep the persistent state needed by the WebTop and other applications, including users preferences, application-invocation information, and application settings and any other attribute-type information.

Abstract: A shared markup system and a method are provided for supporting Web co-browsing. Based on the hyper-text markup language (HTML), the markup system is interoperable across different platforms and Web browsers and provides for online annotation, of shared HTML documents, directly within the browser's windows. The annotations created by the markup system are realized using HTML components that are composed dynamically. Synchronization and control of the browser's environment are also provided to achieve uniform participants' views.
