  • Patent number: 7717184
Abstract: A protection tool is provided to protect a control line in a safe area while one or more slips of a spider are being closed. In another embodiment, a safety interlock system is provided to prevent the closing of the slips before the control line is pulled away from the tubular string. In yet another embodiment, a safety interlock system includes a safety interlock trigger adapted to be actuated by a protection tool. The safety interlock trigger is adapted to detect the physical presence of the protection tool, and thereafter send a signal to the interlock system to enable an operator or a control mechanism to safely close the slips.

  • Patent number: 7213657
Abstract: A coupler and a method for installing an instrumentation line, such as fiber optic cable, into a wellbore. The coupler places upper and lower instrumentation lines in communication with one another downhole to form a single line. The coupler comprises a landing tool and a stinger that lands on the landing tool, thereby placing the upper and the lower instrumentation lines in communication. The landing tool is run into the wellbore at the lower end of a tubular, such as production tubing. The upper instrumentation line affixes to the tubing and landing tool and extends to the surface. The lower instrumentation line affixes along the stinger. In this manner, the lower instrumentation line may be installed after expansion of a well screen or liner and may be later removed from the wellbore prior to well workover procedures without pulling the production string.

  • Patent number: 7159653
Abstract: The present invention involves a method and apparatus for communicating from within a wellbore to the surface of the wellbore, as well as communicating from the surface of the wellbore to downhole within the wellbore. More specifically, the present invention involves a method and apparatus for protecting and controlling cables or lines which connect surface equipment to downhole equipment. A spacer sub comprising a tubular body with a helical groove therearound is used to house one or more downhole cables. In one aspect, the spacer sub has a recess within the helical groove for housing one or more cable connectors. In another aspect, multiple helical grooves are disposed around the spacer sub to protect and house cables of different length.

  • Patent number: 6613982
Abstract: A production string with flexible electrical and/or hydraulic cables extending along therewith is lowered into a well through a blow-out preventer on the seabed and is formed by screwing together pipe lengths. The blow-out preventer having an enveloping pipe ram with an elastic valve element which, when pressurized, expands to envelope the production string at a preselected point. A core pipe is spliced into the production string at a preselected depth by way of threaded connections at its ends. A protective sleeve for the cables is attached to and around the core pipe, forming an annular space through which link pipes extend between end elements. The outlet ends of the link pipes have pressure couplings or blind plugs in unused holes. Support rings prevent the collapse of the protective sleeve under pressure.
