    Abstract: A method for converting wire rod of nonferrous metals and alloys thereof to wire with high elongation and in the annealed state, wherein the reduction in diameter in order to pass from wire rod to wire is carried out by way of a plastic deformation process. The temperature of the metal subjected to plastic deformation is controlled in order to have, at the end of the plastic deformation process, the wire at a temperature higher than or equal to the recrystallization temperature. This avoids the thermal treatment of annealing, necessary in conventional production techniques, achieving a considerable saving in production costs and a wire with characteristics similar to those of a wire subjected to annealing.

The process consists in inserting a bar or wire rod, whose initial profile has a round cross-section, in a rolling unit which is provided with rolling rolls whose profiles define a round passage whose diameter is smaller than the diameter of the input bar or wire rod. Upstream from the rolling unit, the larger-diameter bar or wire rod is subjected to the action of free rollers whose profiles are suitable to deform the larger-diameter bar or wire rod according to a shape which produces, in output from the rolling unit, a bar or wire rod whose cross-section is round and has a smaller diameter.

    Abstract: An apparatus for converting rod stock or wire rod into wire comprises heating of the rod stock or wire rod, high speed rolling and cooling thereof, and final slight drawing to make the surface thereof smooth and finished. The high speed rolling is carried out by a rolling mill having a lightweight construction and roll stands comprising three rolls at 120.degree. from one another. Two of the rolls are rotatably supported by shafts which have eccentrical ends. Two spindles having eccentrical ends engage with their ends corresponding seats in the ends of the shafts, so that rotation of the spindles provides rotation of the shafts and axial displacement thereof in order to adjust the rolling pass.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a rolling unit having three rollers with axes arranged at 120.degree., wherein the main roller shaft derives its motion from a drive and transmits it to the shafts of the other two rollers through bevel gears. To simplify the assembly and service procedures, as well as to improve the roller adjustment facilities, the main roller is carried on a supporting body which can be removably positioned on the unit casing to allow axial adjustment of the main roller. The respective shaft engages rotatively, but in an axially slidable manner, with a coupling shaft connected to the drive. The supporting body may be attached to the casing radially, thereby it becomes possible to assemble the main shaft, together with the roller, bearings, and gears, and then secure the supporting body on the casing.

    Abstract: A casting wheel for a continuous casting machine of the wheel-and-belt type is provided with at least one annular member defining one of the lateral walls of the casting groove. The annular member is secured to one of the support flanges of the casting ring preferably by interposition of a gauged annular distance piece, this piece having each time an axial length such as to obtain, when added to the annular member, the desired groove width. The casting wheel is particularly suitable for casting aluminum strips. Substitution of a gauged annular distance piece with another having a different axial length allows the width of the cast strips to be varied without substituting the whole casting ring.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a method for rolling an ingot having a substantially trapezoidal cross-section and coming from a continuous casting machine of the wheel-and-belt type, the method comprising initial rolling of the ingot simultaneously on the side corresponding to the minor base of the substantially trapezoidal cross-section and on the edges of the major base of the cross-section to obtain a cross-section having two orthogonal axes of symmetry. The ingot is than rolled by subsequent two-roll stands. There is also disclosed a rolling mill for carrying out the method, comprising a first three-roll stand with the rolls arranged to provide the desired cross-section having two orthogonal axes of symmetry, and with subsequent two-roll stands.

    Abstract: The present invention discloses an apparatus for collecting hot wire rod at the output of a rolling mill and cooling the same in such a manner that the same is prevented from being oxidized. The wire rod is conveyed to a coiler in a guide preventing the wire from coming into contact with air and then placed on a tape conveyor having a first portion immerged in a cooling fluid. The coiler is enclosed in a bell-shaped casing immerged in a cooling fluid so as to define and air-tight sealing. The spirals of wire carried by the conveyor are cooled before loaving the cooling fluid down to a temperature lower than the oxidation temperature thereof.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a device for extracting the end portion of wire rod from a laying guide of an Edenborn coiler arranged downstream of a wire rod rolling mill. The device includes an extractor cylinder idly supported by the laying cone of the coiler so as to be substantially stationary during rotation of the coiler or to slightly rotate in a direction opposite to that of the coiler. The cylinder has a diameter slightly smaller than that of the formed coils and a length such as to comprise at least one turn of the deposited coils. When the end portion of the wire rod has leaved the rolling mill and is no more dragged by pinch rollers or the like at the output of the rolling mill, the speed thereof decreases due to friction against the walls of the output guide located between the rolling mill and the coiler.

The clamping may occur by interposition of inserts of wear-resistant material. The clamp means may be made of two parts held together by resilient means and may be housed in the cavities with a certain radial and axial clearance to be themselves displaceable.

    Abstract: A continuous casting machine comprising a wheel with a peripheral casting ring covered through a certain arc by a band.The wheel and ring are mounted on a supporting structure principally comprising two facing flanges fixed to a driveshaft for the wheel, for rotation therewith. The casting ring comprises peripheral edges parallel to the axis of the casting wheel and resting on peripheral surface of the flanges.The peripheral edges of the casting ring have a certain slack on the peripheral surfaces of the flanges, whereby the ring has the freedom to translate in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the wheel. On the other hand the casting ring is constrained to be dragged in the direction of rotation of the casting wheel by a plurality of keys disposed along the periphery thereof and of the flanges.
