  • Patent number: 8682333
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing a message in a mobile, telecommunications device. The method comprises: receiving a Cell Update Confirm (CUC) message; determining whether the device has an empty C_RNTI variable; when the device has an empty C_RNTI variable, determining whether the CUC message includes a new C_RNTI; when the CUC message includes a new C_RNTI and the CUC message would cause the device to enter a state which requires the UE to respond to the message before entering the state, carrying out at least one further step prior to entering the state.

  • Patent number: 8600383
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting cells in a mobile telecommunications system, the system comprising a network of a plurality of cells of a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS) and a network of a plurality of cells of a second Radio Access Technology (RAT), the method comprising, at a user equipment device: when in UMTS mode, flagging in a neighboring cell list stored on the user equipment device information for a cell of a second RAT which is known to be unsuitable for selection. Information from the neighboring cell list information for the flagged cell may be removed, in particular for a limited period of time.

  • Patent number: 8400984
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile communication device includes a processing device, a memory sub-system, a communication sub-system operable to communicate with wireless access networks, and a protocol stack stored in the memory sub-system and executed by the processing device. The protocol stack includes a first access stratum, a second access stratum, a non-access stratum and an access stratum manager. The first access stratum communicates with a first wireless access network via the communication sub-system. The second access stratum communicates with a second wireless access network via the communication sub-system. The non-access stratum communicates with a core network. The access stratum manager interfaces the non-access stratum with the first and second access strata, and is operable to activate the first access stratum to establish a communication link with the core network over the first wireless access network.

  • Patent number: 8023451
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for identifying availability of services in a radio network of a radio communication system. A system information message is generated at the radio access network that identifies the service availability of the radio network, such as by indicating the communication services supported by the network. The system information message, once generated, is communicated upon a broadcast control channel, or other appropriate channel, and delivered to a mobile node. The mobile node detects the system information message and determines the availability of services of the radio network therefrom. Selection of whether to register with the network is made responsive to whether the network supports the communication service that the mobile node intends to initiate.
