Patent number: 6725527Abstract: A magnetic head assembly has an open yoke type write head constructed on top of a read head so that the write head can be constructed with a very narrow track width without restraint by the requirements of the read head. The write head has first and second pole piece portions wherein the second pole piece portion has separate front and back layer portions. A coil layer is wrapped around only the first pole piece portion and the back layer portion so that the front layer portion can be constructed separately to provide a narrow track width. Further, in a preferred embodiment the front layer portion has a reduced thickness and a higher magnetic moment than the thickness and magnetic moment of the first pole piece portion and the back layer portion. Still further, in a preferred embodiment the first pole piece portion and the back layer portion are planar due to polarization of underlying layers.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2001Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Thomas Young Chang, Glen Adam Garfunkel, Edward Hin Pong Lee, Neil Leslie Robertson, Samuel Wonder Yuan

Patent number: 6570743Abstract: The present invention extends the high resistance lead layers of a read head straight back into the head from each of the first and second edges of the read sensor. This lessens the length of each of the high resistance lead layers so that they do not have to be made thicker to satisfy resistance requirements. Accordingly, a lateral width of each high resistance lead portion along the ABS and a thickness thereof are chosen so as to minimize the thickness while yet satisfying the resistance requirements. Further, a method of making the first and second lead layers is provided that minimizes the thickness of the high resistance lead layers. Instead of constructing the high resistance lead layers first, the present method constructs the high resistance lead layers after defining a stripe height of the read sensor so that the lateral expanse of the high resistance lead layers is not altered by ion milling, which ion milling increases the resistance of the high resistance lead layers.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2000Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Glen Adam Garfunkel, Wen-Chien (David) Hsiao, Edward Hinpong Lee, Douglas Johnson Werner

Patent number: 6538857Abstract: A read head is provided with an N-cycle switch for sequentially shorting and unshorting a sense current circuit of a read head so that the read head will be protected from electrostatic discharges (ESDs) by shorting when the read head is not being tested and unshorted during tests of the read head. The shorting and unshorting switches, which are mounted on or in a slider carrying the read head, are activated by a laser beam.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2000Date of Patent: March 25, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Saad Doss, Glen Adam Garfunkel, Edward Hin Pong Lee, Chie Ching Poon, Neil Leslie Robertson, Andrew Ching Tam

Patent number: 6325947Abstract: A method for forming a merged thin film magnetic head having a first shield layer and a combined second shield and bottom pole piece layer arranged in a sandwich supporting a read sensor therebetween at the pole tip region. The combined second shield and bottom pole piece layer are magnetically coupled with the first shield layer at the pole tip end of the yoke region adjacent the read sensor, and overlaying and magnetically coupled with the first shield layer at the back gap region. A patterned opening is provided in the combined second shield and bottom pole piece layer at the yoke region thereof to expose the first shield layer and form a flat planarization surface thereon. A plurality of stacked thin film coil layers are provided in the patterned opening, and a top pole piece layer overlies the thin film coil at the yoke region, overlies the bottom pole piece at the pole tip region providing a pole tip and gap thereat, and overlies the bottom pole piece at the back gap region.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1999Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Glen Adam Garfunkel, Edward Hinpong Lee, Joseph Francis Smyth, Samuel Wonder Yuan

Patent number: 6111406Abstract: A method for assessing write element performance in a combined magnetic head that also includes a magneto-resistive (MR) read element for a data storage drive includes exciting the write element with a square wave immediately after lapping the head during manufacture, before mounting the head for operation in the drive. The write element generates an output signal, and the output signal is detected by the read element and then used to determine whether the write element is defective. By using a square wave, temperature gradients in the head and inductive pick up is avoided, thereby facilitating the use of the read element as a test sensor.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1997Date of Patent: August 29, 2000Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Glen Adam Garfunkel, Donald E. Patent number: 5735036Abstract: A method of lapping the air bearing surface of a magnetoresistive head which minimizes the likelihood of interelement shorts at the air bearing surface is described. In a final, linear lapping phase, the air bearing surface is lapped back and forth parallel to the longitudinal axis of the head elements in an oscillatory path across a stationary lapping surface. Any scratches or smears of the elements will be along the length of the elements rather than transverse to the elements. Any transverse scratches or smears occurring in earlier lapping phases will be removed during the linear lapping phase.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: April 7, 1998Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert Owen Barr, Alain M.
