  • Patent number: 9567828
Abstract: An apparatus and method for substantially sealing an opening defined by a hydrocarbon well downhole component, wherein an interior portion of the downhole component is in fluid communication with a formation surrounding the hydrocarbon well. The apparatus includes a deformable plug adaptable to being injected into the wellbore upstream of the opening and carried through the wellbore in a fluid. The fluid carrying the deformable plug can flow through the opening and the deformable plug is sized and configured such that at least a portion of the deformable plug can deform to the contour of the opening and seat in the opening. The deformable plug is capable of swelling, hardening, or compressing such that the deformable plug forms a substantially sealed relationship with the hydrocarbon well downhole component such that the interior portion of the downhole component ceases to be in fluid communication with the formation surrounding the well.

  • Patent number: 7462999
Abstract: A permanent magnet brushless (PMBL) servo motor test apparatus and method allow testing of a motor in place. A set of static and dynamic tests is performed to determine proper motor operation of armature windings and rotor feedback devices. The test system of the present invention displaces the motor drive system. The test system comprises an armature driver, a feedback device input, and a system controller. The armature windings of the motor-under-test are driven in a polarity sequence according to a test sequence, whereby the rotor is driven in a series of rotations. Angle feedback is tested at a plurality of said rotations. Rotor velocity outputs are tested during said rotations. Armature current and voltage are determined at a plurality of said rotations and winding balance is tested. Said power switch is also operative to apply a voltage between the armature windings and the motor case to test for fault current flow.

  • Publication number: 20070281794
Abstract: A hollow billiard cue having an elongate shaft, a (ferrule) tip portion at the end of the shaft, and a (joint) butt portion at the opposite end. The cue consisting of a number of graphite fibers longitudinally oriented along the shaft; a number of graphite fibers biased to the longitudinally oriented graphite fibers; and a binder holding the fibers together. The fibers may consist of a woven carbon or fiberglass impregnated with resin. The billiard cue is constructed with a vibration dampening material that will absorb the vibration or shock that occurs when the cue strikes the ball. The billiard cue also may have an internal (ferrule) tip that fits inside the shaft.

  • Patent number: 6381065
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for pumping an active medium in an optical amplifier. The active medium substantially maximizes amplification when pumped at a pump wavelength. If the active medium is erbium, for example, a pump wavelength of 980 nm may be employed. The apparatus includes a plurality of fiber Bragg grating lasers operating in a regime of coherence collapse. Each of the lasers generate optical energy at a different wavelength, which are distributed about the pump wavelength. The apparatus also includes optical components for combining the different wavelengths to form a pump beam and a coupler for coupling the pump beam to the active medium.

  • Patent number: 5987994
Abstract: An ultrasonic measurement method in an ultrasonic measurement system having an ultrasonic transducer includes emitting an ultrasonic pulse from the ultrasonic transducer. An ultrasonic pulse is received in accordance with a pulse travel time wherein the amplitude of the received ultrasonic pulse varies according to the pulse travel time. A first electrical signal is provided representative of the received ultrasonic pulse wherein the amplitude of the first electrical signal varies in accordance with the pulse travel time. A second electrical signal is provided in accordance with the first electrical signal wherein the amplitude of the second electrical signal is substantially independent of the pulse travel time. In order to determine the second electrical signal variable amplification is applied to the first electrical signal in accordance with the travel time.
