  • Patent number: 5203070
Abstract: A method of designing and manufacturing an electrical generator which has a specific target power output rating includes the steps of selecting one of a predetermined, standardized set of diameters for the rotor, stator and frame of the generator; and subsequently selecting the length of the generator stator core and one of several standardized number of stator coil slots based on the target power rating and voltage of the generator. The invention permits standardized generator components which are specific to the selected set of diameters to be used during assembly of the generator, instead of customized components, which results in reduced design and manufacturing costs per generator.

  • Patent number: 5177385
Abstract: A simplified, readily removable air gap baffle ring for a gas cooled dynamoelectric machine, such as a turbine generator. The baffle ring comprises two composite rings with a seal material sandwiched therebetween and bonded into a single ring structure. The seal ring attaches to finger plate extensions which are an integral part of the generator core, and forms an air gap seal between the rotor retaining ring and end wedges which extend from the stator coil slots. The air gap baffle assembly of the present invention effectively seals the high pressure zone of the exciter end of the generator, from the lower pressure radial air gap zone located between the generator rotor and stator, to thereby force cooling gas to flow into the rotor and stator.

  • Patent number: 4680342
Abstract: Flame retardant alkenyl aromatic compounds which are vinylbenzyl diaryl phosphine oxides and a method for their preparation are described. They may be polymerized into higher molecular weight flame retardant materials which, in turn, may be admixed with polyphenylene ether resins to form thermoplastic flame resistant molding compositions. The present materials are more resistant to losses in the flame retardancy upon thermal processing, e.g., molding, because the active flame retardant agent, phosphorus, is chemically bound to the polymeric matrix.

  • Patent number: 4624979
Abstract: A method for increasing the heat distortion temperature of certain blends of polyphenylene ether resin and styrene polymers is described in which an admixture is formed of a polyphenylene ether resin and a flame retardant copolymer of styrene and up to 50 percent dibromostyrene. The resulting compositions can be formulated to include one or more additional ingredients and are moldable into articles characterized by good flame retardancy and light stability, as well as a higher heat distortion temperature compared with articles formed from corresponding blends using homopolystyrene or styrene-bromostyrene copolymer.

  • Patent number: 4564656
Abstract: A process for the preparation of a graft product of polyphenylene ether and diene rubber from a starting mixture of the two polymers is described. The process can be extended by further polymerizing an alkenyl aromatic compound such as styrene in the presence of the graft product to form a novel terpolymer. The polymers which result from the process are useful as impact resistant modifiers for various engineering thermoplastics, including polyphenylene ether resins.

  • Patent number: 4563607
Abstract: A mechanical clamping assembly and the method of its application for use on the stator end windings of large steam turbine generators is provided that can be fit in the mid-involute region of the end winding, including any existing machines as may be in use in the field as well as in original manufacture. The invention maintains pressure contact between coils and strain blocks and eliminates the freedom of the coils to vibrate relative to the total end basket assembly. The method comprises steps of forming a loop of impregnated banding material that extends through apertures of support blocks that span a pair of adjacent top and bottom coils, inserting pins in the ends of the loop, twisting a pin, curing the banding material, pulling on a pin to pretension the banding and shimming the pulled pin so that upon its release a tight assembly is provided.

  • Patent number: 4528327
Abstract: There are provided thermoplastic compositions comprising a polyphenylene ether and a rubber modified polystyrene resin having a discontinuous phase comprised largely of particles consisting of a core of polystyrene in a shell of a diene rubber membrane, said particles constituting at least 30 percent of the total volume of the rubber-modified polystyrene. Such compositions provide molded articles with substantial and unexpected properties in impact resistance, transparency and surface gloss, particularly at low mold temperatures, in comparison with known compositions of rubber modified polystyrene alone or those of other polystyrenes combined with polyphenylene ethers.

  • Patent number: 4486024
Abstract: A gland seal assembly is provided which utilizes a double oil flow in conjunction with two gland seal rings. One of the oil streams is passed through a gland seal ring in a radial direction into the clearance gap between that ring and a rotatable shaft. Another flow of oil is passed between that ring and another gland seal ring in such a way as to exert a force between the rings which pushes the two rings in opposing axial directions away from each other and toward axial faces of an angular groove in a gland seal bracket. By causing a force against the gland seal rings in axial opposing directions, the rings are moved towards the axial faces of an annular groove in such a way that gaps between the gland seal rings and the groove wall are reduced with a corresponding reduction in the non-functional flow of oil.

  • Patent number: 4365038
Abstract: Novel compositions are provided which include a polyphenylene ether resin and EPDM-rubber polystyrene modified or polymerized with silicone oil which is free from unsaturated hydrocarbon groups. Included within the disclosure are methods of preparing and molding such compositions and the molded products obtained therefrom. The compositions provide molded products with substantially better room temperature properties, such as Izod impact and Gardner impact strengths, and surface appearance (gloss), than blends of polyphenylene ether with EPDM-polystyrene with no modifier or modified with an aliphatic mineral oil. Both Izod and Gardner impact strengths at low temperatures are also improved. Also included within the scope of the invention are reinforced and flame-retardant compositions of said polyphenylene ether resin and said EPDM-polystyrene polymerized with silicone oil.
