Patent number: 9610653Abstract: The present invention is a method for separating a workpiece from a common substrate. It includes the steps of providing the workpiece, generating, within a beam source, a beam of laser pulses configured to modify a portion of the workpiece, determining a depth for creating a modified region based upon a characteristic of the workpiece and modifying a plurality of regions within the workpiece to form a plurality of modified regions. Modifying the plurality of regions includes directing the beam of laser pulses from an output of the beam source onto the workpiece, causing relative motion between the workpiece and the output of the beam source while directing the beam of laser pulses onto workpiece, and modifying a characteristic of the pulses of the beam upon generating a number of pulses which generally correspond to creating the modified regions to the determined depth.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2013Date of Patent: April 4, 2017Assignee: Electro Scientific Industries, Inc.Inventors: Haibin Zhang, Fang Shan, Mathew Rekow, Min Zhang, Glenn Simenson, Qian Xu, James Brookhyser, Joe Frankel, Michael Darwin, Jack Rundel, Matthew Pysher

Patent number: 9346130Abstract: A laser machining process is described for laser machining glass or glass-like materials. This process machines articles or features in articles with chamfered edges in one manufacturing operation. Chamfered edges are desirable in glass and glass-like materials because they resist fracturing or chipping and eliminate sharp edges. Producing articles or features in articles in one manufacturing operation is desirable because it can save time and expense by eliminating the need to transfer the article to a separate machine for chamfering after laser machining. Alternatively, it can permit use of less expensive equipment because the same laser used for machining can be used to form the chamfer instead of having a separate process perform the chamfering. Producing chamfers with laser machining results in high quality chamfers without the need for a separate polishing or finishing step.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2008Date of Patent: May 24, 2016Assignee: Electro Scientific Industries, Inc.Inventors: Weisheng Lei, Glenn Simenson, Hisashi Matsumoto, Guangyu Li, Jeffery Howerton

Patent number: 8729404Abstract: A method and apparatus for filling a via with transparent material is presented, including the steps of providing a panel having a via, occluding the via with transparent material in a workable state so that a portion of the occluding material is internal to the via and a portion of the material is external to said via. The external and internal portions are separated so the transparent filler material, when set, forms a smooth and featureless surface. This causes the filled via to have a substantially even and uniform appearance over a wide range of viewing angles when lit.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2011Date of Patent: May 20, 2014Assignee: Electro Scientific Industries, Inc.Inventors: Glenn Simenson, William Antoni, Steven Cohen, Jeffery Howerton

Patent number: 8116341Abstract: Dual-beam laser outputs, preferably derived from a single laser beam, improve the quality of the sidewalls of vias drilled in a target material, such as printed circuit board, comprising fiber-reinforced resin. Two embodiments each use two laser output components to remove a portion of target material from a target material location of a workpiece and rapidly clean remnants of the target material bonded to a metal layer underlying the target material location at a material removal rate. A first embodiment entails directing for incidence on a portion of the target material at the target material location a processing laser output having first and second components characterized by respective first and second wavelengths. A second embodiment entails directing for incidence on a portion of the target material at the target material location a processing laser output having first and second components characterized by respective first and pulse widths.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2007Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: Electro Scientific Industries, Inc.Inventors: Weisheng Lei, Yunlong Sun, Yasu Osako, John Davignon, Glenn Simenson, Hisashi Matsumoto

Patent number: 7985942Abstract: Laser pulse energy adjustments are motivated by an understanding of the effect of laser pulse width variations among different lasers on satisfying a quality metric associated with a laser-processed target. In a preferred embodiment, the adjustments normalize this effect among different lasers drilling vias in a target specimen. The number of pulses delivered to the target specimen to form each via can be modified, based on the pulse energy applied to the via location, to control different via quality metrics.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2005Date of Patent: July 26, 2011Assignee: Electro Scientific Industries, Inc.Inventors: Weisheng Lei, Glenn Simenson, Jeff Howerton, Mark Unrath
