  • Publication number: 20180300065
Abstract: Performance of a computing system is improved by identifying and mitigating a bottleneck along a path that spans a storage system and a virtual machine causing the bottleneck. A mitigation action is selected and performed according to the bottleneck location. To identify a virtual machine involved in the bottleneck, end-to-end latency values connected with individual virtual machines are used, some of which are estimated using the presently disclosed techniques. Specifically, a backend storage latency from a specific virtual machine, and a flash virtualization platform, network, and queuing latency for the virtual machine are not conventionally observable, but are instead estimated using other readily available usage statistics.

  • Publication number: 20180293023
Abstract: Performance of a computing system is improved by identifying storage clients that generate relatively large workloads and mitigating overall impact of the identified storage clients. Latency is monitored for different write and read I/O request block sizes. When latency for any request bock size increases above a predefined threshold for the request block size, diagnostics are performed to identify a storage client that generated an excessive workload or workloads comprising large blocks that caused the increased latency. A mitigation action can then be performed.

  • Patent number: 9971548
Abstract: Performance of a computing system is improved by avoiding and/or eliminating overload conditions in storage systems. Performance utilization calculations are used to predict that a candidate placement configuration of storage resources within the storage systems will avoid overload conditions. The performance utilization calculations use performance profiles in conjunction with workload profiles to account for both storage system performance and actual workload traffic. Performance utilization calculations can also be used to report storage controller utilization information.

  • Patent number: 9270537
Abstract: Example embodiments provide various techniques for distributing connections within a connectional parallelism architecture. In one embodiment, a method is provided where resource utilizations of connection groups are measured. Here, each connection group is assigned to one of multiple processors. A probability distribution is accessed that maps probabilities assigned to relative resource utilizations. A relative resource utilization of one of the connection groups is determined based on a resource utilization of the one connection group relative to other resource utilizations of other connection groups. A probability from the probability distribution is identified based on the determined relative resource utilization, and based on the identified probability, a connection is assigned to this connection group for execution by one of the processors assigned to this connection group.

  • Patent number: 9043802
Abstract: Embodiments provide various techniques for dynamic adjustment of a number of threads for execution in any domain based on domain utilizations. In a multiprocessor system, the utilization for each domain is monitored. If a utilization of any of these domains changes, then the number of threads for each of the domains determined for execution may also be adjusted to adapt to the change.

  • Patent number: 8423731
Abstract: A system and method for managing automatic data protection features, e.g., backup scheduling and data storage capabilities, e.g., policy provisioning of a storage system to enable information lifecycle management of data served by the system. A novel management module executes within a storage operating system of the storage system to manage the automatic scheduling of backup operations for data based on a minimal set of user configurations. The management module cooperates with a mirroring application to manage the generation of persistent consistency point image (PCPIs) used as backups (replicas) of the data. The management module distributes the data containers scheduled for PCPI generation among time slots within a defined backup time window. At the appropriate time slot, each PCPI the data container is illustratively backed up from the primary storage space to the secondary storage space.

  • Patent number: 8037524
Abstract: A system and method for guard point licensing is provided. Licensed software executing on a storage system is modified to include one or more guard points to ensure that appropriate licenses have been obtained by a customer. During initialization of a guard point, a management system obtains a first random number (R1) from the first system and passes R1 and an application specific context command to the second system. The second system returns to the management system a pass phrase and a second random number (R2), which are then forwarded to the first system. The pass phrase is a data structure identifying the system that generated the pass phrase as well as containing the application specific context command. The above steps are then repeated with the first and second systems inverted.

  • Patent number: 7827366
Abstract: A system, a method, and a computer program product for providing continuous data protection and long-term data protection of data in a storage system. A persistent point-in-time Image (PPI) image of the data is created and stored at a first storage. The data at the first storage is updated frequently to provide continuous data protection. A copy of the dataset is created and stored in a secondary storage. The copy of the dataset stored in a secondary storage is updated and backed up less frequently than the PPIs image of data stored at the first storage to ensure long-term data protection.
