  • Publication number: 20090173890
Abstract: Disclosed is a detector for monitoring a UV false positive from genuine X-ray positive of color developing radiation sensitive devices. A layer which can be scratched off and is opaque to undesired radiation but transparent to X-ray is printed on the sensor. If the sensor displays a signal (i.e., develops color), whether it is genuine or false positive can be confirmed by scratching off the opaque layer. If the signal is a genuine positive, the whole sensor will be uniformly exposed/colored including the area under the opaque layer. If it is a false positive, the area under the scratched off layer will be of lighter color than the rest of the sensor.

  • Publication number: 20090128345
Abstract: Disclosed is a device for monitoring one or more of integral value of time and temperature, UV light exposure and a pre-determined temperature of an item. The device is useful for monitoring items or materials which are sensitive to time-temperature, UV light and/or a pre-determined temperature. Radiation sensitive devices such as self-indicating instant radiation alert dosimeters (SIRAD) can be accidentally, inadvertently or intentionally over exposed to time-temperature, UV light and a pre-determined higher temperature. Such over exposure can provide a false positive or false negative signal. A device based on polymerization of diacetylenes and melting of partially polymerized diacetylenes, both of which are associated with color changes, are proposed as false positive, false negative, and tamper indicator.

  • Patent number: 7476874
Abstract: Described as a self-indicating instant radiation dosimeter (1001) for monitoring high energy radiations, such as X-ray. The dosimeter contains a radiation sensitive, color changing, indicating composition (10), e.g., a diacetylene (R—C?C—C?C—R?, where R and R? are substituents groups) or a radiochromic dye, a polymeric binder (20) and optionally a shelf life extender (50) or an activator (40). The radiation sensitive composition (10) changes color instantly when exposed to high energy radiation. The dose is estimated by comparing the color with a color reference chart or more accurately with a spectrophotometer or an optical densitometer. The radiation sensitive composition (10) is protected from low energy radiation such as UV light, by a layer of low energy absorbing materials, such as UV absorbers.

  • Patent number: 7227158
Abstract: A dual dosimeter system with (1) a stick-on, self-indicating, instant radiation dosimeter applied onto (2) a conventional radiation dosimeter and/or detector for monitoring high energy radiations, such as X-ray, electrons and neutrons. Radiation dosimeters, such as X-ray film and TLD (Thermoluminescence Dosimeters), are highly sensitive but are not instant. Radiation detectors, such Geiger counter, ionization chamber and silicon diode type electronic detectors, are highly sensitive and instant but have several other drawbacks, e.g., they are fragile, bulky, dose rate dependent or require electrical power. In the event of a dirty bomb, nuclear detonation or a radiological accident, one needs to know the harmful high dose (e.g., higher than 0.1 rad) instantly so proper precautions can be taken and medical treatment, if required, can be given to the victim. If a self-indicating instant dosimeter is applied to the conventional dosimeters and detectors, one would know high dose instantly.

  • Patent number: 6472214
Abstract: A device composed of (1) a color changing indicator, (2) an optional polymeric binder, preferably having gel forming capability, and (3) an activator solvent system which induces a color change in the indicator when device is frozen, in the region of about 0 to −30° C. An example of the device is an indicator of a fine dispersion of partially polymerized diacetylene of the formula: R—C═C—C═C—R, where R is a substituent group, e.g., 4BCMU where R=—(CH2)OCONHCH2COO(CH2)4H, dispersed in a mixture of solvents, e.g., 96:4 water:ED (ethylene glycol diacetate), with or without a polymeric binder. When the temperature of the device is lowered to the freezing point of water, the activator solvent phase separates out of the mixture and induces a color change in the indicator. The device can undergo an irreversible color change, e.g., from blue to red, when the activator mixture is frozen in the region of about 0 to 30° C.

  • Patent number: 5049230
Abstract: A one-step process for treating polymer surfaces prior to electroless deposition is disclosed. Polymer parts are dipped in a solution containing a good solvent for the polymer, a substantial non-solvent for the polymer, an etchant and, where one of these is immiscible with one or more of the others, a solubilizing agent miscible with the immiscible components to provide a single liquid phase. Formulations are provided for pre-swelling and etching of functionalized polymers, such as polycarbonate in one, two and three steps. The etched surface can then be plated with electroless nickel or copper with satisfactory adhesion of the plated metals. Swelling agents make polymer molecules on and near the surface of the polymer easily accessible to a degradation agent. A degradation agent degradates the polymer molecules. If required, a solubilizing agent increases the miscibility of the degradation agent and the swelling agent. A wetting agent increases the effectiveness of the etching agent.

  • Patent number: 5045283
Abstract: A moving boundary device for monitoring the time-temperature storage history, i.e. shelf life, of perishable products. The device is constructed of an activator tape, containing an activator composition in an activator matrix, an indicating tape, containing an indicating composition in an indicator matrix in which the matrices are adhered together to form a wedge-shaped composite matrix, preferably by means of a pressure sensitive adhesive. The device operates by allowing the activating composiiton, e.g. an organic acid such as citric acid, to diffuse through the increasingly thicker composite matrix to continuously contact the indicating composition, e.g. an acid-base dye indicator such as 2,2',4,4',4",-pentamethoxy triphenylmethanol, to produce a visually observable color change at the temperature being monitored. The color change appears as a moving boundary at the color/non-color interface which moves transversely along the length of the device toward the thicker end of the composite matrix.

  • Patent number: 4452995
Abstract: Polydiacetylene gel compositions, comprised of a polydiacetylene and a gel-forming liquid therefor, are described which undergo a change in color and in physical state to a solution when heated to a predetermined temperature. The gel compositions exhibit hysteresis temperature characteristics which allow the original color change to be maintained and recorded until the solution is cooled below the predetermined temperature. Thus, the gel compositions are useful in temperature-indicating devices for reversibly monitoring a wide range of temperatures. A novel class of polydiacetylene compounds is also described, useful in forming the gel compositions, formed from monomeric diacetylenediol bis(alkoxycarbonylmethylurethanes).
