  • Patent number: 8457228
Abstract: A device may be capable of communicating using at least two type types of modulation methods. Methods and systems are provided for communication of data according to a communications method in which a master transceiver communicates with one or more slave transceivers according to a master/slave relationship. A first data message may include first information and second information that are modulated according to a first modulation method. The second information may include lower data rate data. A second data message may include third information that may be modulated according to the first modulation method and that may indicate an impending change to a second modulation method. The second modulation method may be used for transmitting fourth information, and the fourth information may be included in the second message. The fourth information may include higher data rate data, for example Internet access data.

  • Publication number: 20120106604
Abstract: A device may be capable of communicating using at least two type types of modulation methods. The device may include a transceiver capable of acting as a master according to a master/slave relationship in which communication from a slave to a master occurs in response to communication from the master to the slave. The master transceiver may send transmissions structured with a first portion and a payload portion. Information in the first portion may be modulated according to a first modulation method and indicate an impending change to a second modulation method, which is used for transmitting the payload portion. The discrete transmissions may be addressed for an intended destination of the payload portion.

  • Publication number: 20100183055
Abstract: A single subscriber line multi-point communication system is disclosed. In general, the multi-point communication system can include a first transceiver coupled to a subscriber line capable of transmitting and receiving at least two modulation methods, either of said modulation methods being operable to transmit a test signal, and a second transceiver coupled to said subscriber line capable of transmitting and receiving said at least two modulation methods, the second transceiver being operable to receive the test signal and determine at least one channel parameter from the test signal. A master transceiver that can be used in various embodiments of a single subscriber line multi-point communication system, and a tributary transceiver are further disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7711109
Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for transmitting a data-bearing signal and a non-data-bearing signal. One embodiment comprises communicatively coupling a data-bearing signal during a first time period and communicatively coupling a non-data-bearing signal during a second time period. The data-bearing signal has a first PSD. The non-data-bearing signal has a second PSD substantially the same as the first over a range of frequencies. The non-data-bearing signal has characteristics facilitating echo cancellation. Another embodiment comprises a line interface and a transmitter coupled to the line interface, comprising a data encoder and a periodic signal generator. The encoder is configured to produce a data-bearing signal with a first PSD. The periodic signal generator is configured to produce a non-data-bearing signal with a second PSD. The second PSD is substantially the same as the first PSD over a first range of frequencies.

  • Publication number: 20090262911
Abstract: Using the concepts of inverse multiplexing, repeaterless backhaul can be provided on loaded or unloaded loops. Inverse multiplexing can effectively support a large bit rate capacity between the conversion equipment and the CO-side equipment by utilizing a large enough number of potentially low capacity loops. As the distance that the data has to be backhauled increases, the bit rate capacities of the loops generally decrease. However, this decrease in the bit rate capacities of the loops can be compensated for by using inverse multiplexing to gather together enough loops to meet the data rate requirements for backhauling customer data given various service level and contention criteria.

  • Publication number: 20090262912
Abstract: Distortion caused by a DSL signal can be determined with the DSL signal. The DSL signal and/or the power spectral density (PSD) can be altered to suitably reduce or eliminate the distortion effects, which normally would be reduced by a POTS splitter. As a result of such adjustments to the DSL signal, the POTS band noise is suitably reduced to resolve potential adverse POTS quality issues. In addition, the DSL performance can be improved as well as the undesirable distortion is reduced. Splitterless DSL allows the DSL equipment to be connected to subscriber loops without needing a POTS splitter. This splitterless DSL configuration may be used with conversion equipment utilized to provide indirect DSL service over loaded and/or unloaded loops. In addition, the splitterless DSL configuration also will work with normal DSLAMs.

  • Patent number: 7471777
Abstract: Indirect digital subscriber line (DSL) service generally involves connecting conversion equipment that converts between DSL service delivered to a customer premises and DSL service that connects back to a data network. Indirect DSL service may be delivered on the same loop to the customer premises that also carries a native 0-4 KHz POTS interface. For larger deployments, the conversion equipment may include inverse multiplexing to combine multiple links back to the data network to support DSL service. Furthermore, the conversion equipment may include functions to digitize the POTS service. Aggregating DSL data from multiple customers and/or digitizing POTS service that may be multiplexed with the DSL data allows for significant pair gain opportunities.

  • Patent number: 7272215
Abstract: The preferred embodiments of the present invention generally provide improved communications over a subscriber loop that is loaded with at least one and potentially a plurality of load coils. The preferred embodiments of the present invention will support digital subscriber line service over loaded subscriber loops that also support a native POTS interface and offer various techniques for advantageously arbitrating use of the 0-4 KHz baseband between POTS and DSL. Furthermore, the rapid start and stop DSL modulation techniques as well as various mechanisms such as protocol spoofing allow DSL service to appear to be always-on for many end user applications even though DSL communication may cease for POTS signaling messages and completed POTS telephone calls.

  • Patent number: 5230010
Abstract: Fractional rate modulation is accomplished by separating incoming data into frames of bits. Each frame is partitioned into bit words of unequal lengths. The words are divided by a modulus to obtain remainders. The remainders are transmitted using for example QAM modulation. At the receiving end the process is reversed. The ratio of the baud rate of the system to the incoming bit rate defines the modulus as well as the number of QAM modulation points.
