Abstract: A method and system for font building by providing for the downloading of a subset of glyphs at a client device from a server. The subset can include one or more particular requested glyphs. The subset is accompanied by one or more further glyphs determined by selection criteria, which can include: frequency of use of the glyphs in a particular language; frequency of use of the glyphs by at least one client device; and relationships between particular glyphs.

Abstract: A method of allocating memory in a data processing system 10 and a memory allocation mechanism 54 are provided. Memory is allocated by the memory allocation mechanism in response to a memory allocation request 56 from a process 50 running on the system 10. The request 56 includes data identifying the size of the block required and an indication of a mask bit pattern. The memory allocation mechanism receives the request, selects a block of memory having an appropriate size and having an address with a bit pattern which corresponds correctly to the indicated mask bit pattern, and allocates the selected block of memory to the process.

Abstract: An apparatus for validating a value of a variable data item in a software routine in execution includes a profile set generator that generates a profile set of typical values of the variable data item, a profile rule generator that generates a profile rule representing the profile set, and a profile checker that determines if a value of the variable data item satisfies the profile rule.

Abstract: An electrical socket means has electrical contact means within a housing, the electrical contact means being formed of an integral or one-piece electrically conductive member having a socket portion for releasable engagement with plug means of an electrical device and securing means for locating and securing an electrical wire for supplying electrical power to the device. The securing means comprises a spring arm bearing resiliently against another part of the member for locating and securing the wire therebetween. An electrical socket assembly has a main body having one or more apertures for location of such an electrical socket means therein.
