  • Patent number: 6713253
Abstract: A method and kit for predicting increased risk of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy which includes isolating genomic DNA from a sample from a diabetic patient. The genetic polymorphism pattern for the genes IL-1A, IL-1B and IL-1RN is then identified in the DNA. The identified pattern is compared with control patterns of known polymorphisms, and patients expressing a genetic polymorphism pattern associated with increased risk of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy are identified.

  • Publication number: 20030152947
Abstract: Certain aspects of the invention relate to methods for determining a subject's susceptibility to the early onset or progression of aging-related conditions. In certain aspects the invention relates to accessing the genotype of a subject with respect to an allele of IL-1 pattern 1, pattern 2 and/or pattern 3. In other aspects, the invention relates to methods for selecting a therapeutic regimen, identifying age-related biomarkers, monitoring the progress of age-related conditions and identifying therapeutics for delaying or diminishing the onset of aging-related conditions.

  • Publication number: 20030124524
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for identifying substances that modulate the immune response in a genotype specific manner. In general, methods of the invention involve genotyping subjects to identify those having a genotype associated with one or more inflammatory disorder. These subjects, or cells derived therefrom, are monitored for a biomarker for activation of the inflammatory system. The subjects or cells are then contacted with a test substance and the biomarker is re-measured. If the biomarker changes to indicate a decreased activation of the inflammatory system, the test substance may have an anti-inflammatory effect on subjects with that genotype.

  • Patent number: 6437216
Abstract: The present provides a mammal in which the expression of one or more interleukin genes has been suppressed. More specifically, the invention concerns the inactivating deletion of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist gene to produce a knock-out non-human mammal with decreased or completely suppressed expression of the endogenous gene. The invention provides methods for preparing such knock-out mammals and methods of using the knock-out mammals to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic agents and regimens to treat diseases or disorders associated with perturbations in the interleukin pathways.
