    Abstract: A winding arrangement for a rotor pole in a synchronous machine having edgewise wound conductors forming a coil for the pole, the pole having at each end an end plate to provide curved corner portions for the winding. The conductor has a slot extending through it with the walls of the slot parallel to the edges of the conductor. The slot is provided in the conductor at the corner region where the edgewise wound conductor is to bend around the corner. The slot reduces the upset which occurs at the inner edge of the conductor where it bends, and it also permits the conductor to follow the curved corner portion more closely.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a system for protecting an amortisseur winding during the starting of a synchronous motor. The system compares the actual slip frequency of the accelerating motor with predetermined slip frequencies. These predetermined slip frequencies are each associated with a timer which measures successive time segments. Each timer is stopped when the actual slip frequency, which decreases as rotor speed increases, is less than the associated predetermined slip frequency. When the timer is stopped a successive timer is started. In this manner the acceleration of the motor is broken up into time segments. The initial timer is started when the motor starts. The final timer is stopped when the rotor field current is applied to bring the motor into synchronism. Should any timer be permitted to have its timed segment expire before being stopped, the motor is shut down. There is also provided a thermal memory which receives information from the expired timer as to its associated slip frequency.

    Abstract: Apparatus for controlling the starting of a three-phase, salient pole, synchronous motor employs a signal representing slip frequency obtained from a power sensor connected to the motor supply. It requires no connection to the field coil or to other motor component. Since the signal can be obtained from a power sensor, the starting can be controlled from a location remote from the motor, for example at the motor control switchgear. A detector determines when the signal has decreased in frequency to a point representing a rotor speed where field excitation should be applied and it provides an output control signal. This control signal causes field excitation to be applied. In its broadest sense the apparatus may be used to indicate slip frequency remotely.
