  • Patent number: 5640941
Abstract: An internal combustion engine with charge stratification and tumble motion is provided. A tumble control valve is located in the intake pore upstream of the fuel injector creating a high velocity airflow. Fuel injected by the fuel injector is entrained into the high velocity airflow produced by the tumble control valve thereby establishing an airflow within the cylinder having fuel rich and fuel lean regions. The airflow in the cylinder circulates about an axis substantially perpendicular to the axis of operation of the piston.

  • Patent number: 5544626
Abstract: A finger follower type rocker arm has an outer body that engages the stem of an engine valve. Within the body is pivotally mounted an inner arm engaged and moved by the cam lobe of an engine camshaft. A latching pin normally causes the inner arm and outer body to act as an integral unit to activate the engine valve in a conventional manner. Selective withdrawal of the latching pin permits the cam lobe to move the inner arm in a free-wheeling manner without effecting movement of the outer body or valve stem, thus disabling the engine valve.

  • Patent number: 5401001
Abstract: The valve shaft passes through a journal bearing in the wall of the valve body to an actuating lever attached to the shaft on the outside of the valve body. This journal bearing is sealed by an arrangement of several parts to prevent escape of exhaust gases. These parts include a bellows and ceramic thrust washers. By making the valve shaft axis non-perpendicularly intersecting the axis of the valve body wall, the entire circumference of the valve blade can be sealed to the valve body wall when the valve is closed.

  • Patent number: 5309880
Abstract: A multicylinder reciprocating internal combustion engine with a dual induction system having at least one exhaust poppet valve and a single intake poppet valve for each cylinder, with the intake valve being located so as to control the flow of charge into the cylinder, and with each valve being operated by a rocker arm driven by a pushrod. Each intake port has a vertical dividing wall separating the port into primary and secondary passages, with the primary passages being oriented so as to cause rotational flow about the outermost portion of the cylinder, and with the secondary passages being oriented so as to cause flow directed about a radially inward portion of the cylinder. Flow through the secondary passages is controlled by a number of secondary throttle valves mounted upon a common shaft which extends through the secondary passages, but not through the primary passages.
