  • Patent number: 5910647
Abstract: A weighing apparatus includes a base supporting a cantilevered elastic member bearing a load platform. The interior of the elastic member is hollowed and is provided with first and second piezoelectric transducers mounted on respective opposed posts. The transducers are arranged substantially parallel to each other with a small gap between them and are coupled to an amplifier to form a "delay line" and a positive feedback loop, i.e. a natural oscillator.

  • Patent number: 5911158
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining the dynamic response of a physical structure is disclosed. A single sheet of a piezoelectric polymer film, preferably polyvinylidene fluoride, or PVDF, is coated on one side with a thin layer of conductive material to serve as a ground electrode. The other side of the sheet is coated with a thin layer or conductive material in a non-contiguous pattern of individual electrodes defining an array of discrete piezoelectric transducers. Sensor leads are connected to each individual electrode and lead to a signal processor which includes associated software for determining from the processed electrical signals relative strain amplitudes of the surface area of a physical structure onto which the sheet is attached. The resulting output can be used to record strain time histories for later processing or, more simply, to show the time-averaged, steady state strain response of a structure.

  • Patent number: 5910346
Abstract: Tubular workpieces of oriented polymers such as polyethylene polyester and PVC are formed by drawing a workpiece over an expanding former in the absence of any force perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece. The processes do not require the use of any liquid lubricant. They enable greater degrees of expansion and hence orientation in the direction perpendicular to the axis to be achieved and result in products of improved appearance and strength.

  • Patent number: 5910876
Abstract: A printed circuit board includes an edge connector operable to be coupled to an expansion bus. An integrated circuit is mounted on the printed circuit board and is coupled to the edge connector. The integrated circuit is operable to snoop memory operations on the expansion bus and cause selected memory data to be stored in a memory on the printed circuit board. A first power conductor extends across a first portion of the printed circuit board and is coupled to the integrated circuit. A second power conductor extends across a second portion of the printed circuit board and is also coupled to the integrated circuit. The circuit board also includes a decoupling unit connected between the first power conductor and the second power conductor. The decoupling unit causes disconnect of the first power conductor from the second power conductor during times in which voltage within the first power conductor is less than voltage within the second power conductor.

  • Patent number: 5908122
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for reducing the oscillatory motion of rotary crane payloads during operator-commanded or computer-controlled maneuvers. An Input-shaping filter receives input signals from multiple operator input devices and converts them into output signals readable by the crane controller to dampen the payload tangential and radial sway associated with rotation of the jib. The input signals are characterized by a hub rotation trajectory .gamma.(t), which includes a jib angular acceleration .gamma., a trolley acceleration x, and a load-line length velocity L. The system state variables are characterized by a tangential rotation angle .theta.(t) and a radial rotation angle .phi.(t) of the load-line. The coupled equations of motion governing the filter are non-linear and configuration-dependent. In one embodiment, a filter is provided between the operator and the crane for filtering undesired frequencies from the angular .gamma. and trolley x velocities to suppress payload oscillation.

  • Patent number: 5908779
Abstract: The invention pertains to a novel method and construct for regulating gene expression through inhibition of gene expression by nuclear antisense RNA. The construct provides an efficient means for introducing, expressing and accumulating the antisense RNA in the nucleus. The antisense RNA hybridizes to the sense mRNA in the nucleus, thereby preventing both processing and cytoplasmic transport. The construct comprises a promoter, antisense sequences, and a cis- or trans-ribozyme which generates 3'-ends independently of the polyadenylation machinery and thereby inhibits the transport of the RNA molecule to the cytoplasm. The construct may also comprise a histone stem-loop structure that assists in stabilizing the transcripts against exonucleolytic degradation.
