  • Patent number: 5532454
Abstract: A method of joining metal parts by fusion arc welding in a weld of small volume includes the steps of providing the metal parts to be joined having a first side which accessible to a welding operation and a second side opposite the first side. The metal parts have welding surfaces shaped to have a first flank adjacent the first side and a second flank adjacent the second side, a step joining the flanks. Each part has a relief bulge formed in the second side adjacent the second flank, and a centering offset at the second flank to position the metal parts relative to one another for welding. The relief bulge is provided to ensure that the centering offsets melt during welding, and is shaped to have a sufficient size so that a predetermined melt-through point develops for melting of the centering offset during welding.

  • Patent number: 5466910
Abstract: In a method of testing weld seams using an eddy-current technique, large-volume and coarse-grained weld seams are subjected to the testing, said weld seams being tested for the presence of faults in layers on-line during their buildup. The method is particularly suitable for testing components with austenitic weld metal. It is notable for a high fault location probability.

  • Patent number: 4710103
Abstract: Steam turbine blades are fastened in an outer layer of weld material applied by deposit welding to the outer surface of the rotor body, the composition of the weld material being optimally matched with respect to hot strength and/or corrosion resistance, in particular stress corrosion resistance, to the local mechanical, thermal and chemical requirements. A possible option is additionally to insert a deposit welded intermediate layer of medium alloying element content. Steels with 10-14% Cr, low carbon and additions of Mo and possibly V are preferred as the weld material for the layer.

  • Patent number: 4219717
Abstract: A method of connecting metallic parts, and metallic parts so produced, by means of arc fusion welding by producing a low volume welding seam (narrow gap welding), wherein the workpiece parts to be jointed and forming a narrow gap are initially welded at their butt joint by means of, for instance, electron-beam welding, plasma-arc welding, laser-beam welding or argon arc-welding to produce a base seam with or without filler material, and thereafter the workpiece flanks forming the narrow gap are united by alternately depositing weld beads at first one and the other workpiece flank by submerged-arc welding.

  • Patent number: 4063062
Abstract: In the preparation of plane or curved workpieces for welding together by means of an electron beam and wherein the weld takes the form of a full penetration joint, fusion lips are provided at the place where the lower welding bead forms. In the case where the workpieces are constituted by rotationally symmetrical thick-walled hollow bodies such as rotor discs for construction of turbo-machines which upon welding together form a closed cavity, the fusion lips have an annular configuration and are located at the inner radial contour of the welding interface. The workpieces are also provided with an arrangement for centering the lips and a metal foil is inserted between the lips to improve the toughness of the weld material, the foil having a carbon content lower than that of the parent metal of the workpieces.
