  • Patent number: 11256577
Abstract: Techniques are provided for selective snapshot creation using source tagging of input-output (I/O) operations. One method comprises receiving an I/O operation; obtaining an I/O tag associated with the I/O operation indicating a source of the I/O operation (e.g., a source application or a source virtual machine); updating a cumulative I/O tag value associated with the I/O tag that indicates an amount of activity associated with the I/O tag; and initiating a snapshot of at least a portion of a storage system that stores data associated with the I/O operation in response to the cumulative I/O tag value satisfying a corresponding threshold value. A source device associated with the I/O operation may associate the I/O tag with the I/O operation and send the I/O operation with the I/O tag to the storage system.

  • Patent number: 11144408
Abstract: A method, computer program product, and computer system for receiving, by a master controller, a request to create a read-only snapshot for an asynchronous source volume, wherein the master controller may be assigned ownership of the read-only snapshot. A peer controller may be assigned as a secondary owner of the read-only snapshot. Ownership of the peer controller as the secondary owner of the read-only snapshot may be revoked based upon a change in metadata of the read-only snapshot. The read-only snapshot may be replicated, asynchronously, from a replication source to a replication destination.

  • Patent number: 10445193
Abstract: An information handling system includes a plurality of backup devices, and a host device. The backup devices stores backup copies of data in the information handling system. The host device includes a database to store the data for the information handling system, and restore circuitry. The restore circuitry receives a restore event notification indicating a failure of the database. The restore circuitry then determines a number of backup copies of the data in the backup devices, and selects a combination of the backup devices, including first and second backup devices, to restore the data to the database based on the number of backup copies. The restore circuitry also restores the data to the database via a first thread associated with the first backup device, and a second thread associated with the second backup device, and the first and second threads are executed in parallel.

  • Publication number: 20170123657
Abstract: An information handling system may include a processor and a program of executable instructions embodied in non-transitory computer-readable media accessible to the processor, configured to, when read and executed by the processor: (i) communicate to a volume owner of a logical storage unit storing a snapshot to be backed up, an instruction other than an input/output read instruction for backing up the snapshot, wherein the volume owner is one of a plurality of storage nodes in a scale-out storage area network architecture communicatively coupled to the information handling system; (ii) responsive to the instruction, receive from the volume owner pages of data associated with the snapshot and metadata associated with the pages; (iii) from the metadata, form back up metadata for each page; (iv) write the pages to a back up device communicatively coupled to the information handling system; and (v) upload the back up metadata to a metadata server.

  • Patent number: 9015527
Abstract: Techniques for data backup and recovery are described. In one implementation, at least one storage device storing original data which has failed is determined. Once the failed storage device is determined, backup related information corresponding to the failed at least one storage device is determined. Based on the backup related information at least one backup of the original data from a storage unit is identified. The backup as identified is eventually used for recovering data corresponding to the original data.
