  • Patent number: 5997495
Abstract: An inflatable wrap for promoting venous or arterial blood flow enhancement in the human hand. The wrap comprises an inflatable bag fastened to a backing material. The bag is shaped to fit against the palm of the hand and portions of the back of the hand. The backing material comprises a base portion substantially corresponding to the palm of the hand and two or more interengageable lobes that may be fastened together across the back of the hand to retain the inflatable bag securely against the hand such that upon inflation of the bag a pumping pressure is applied positively to the hand to promote the venous or arterial flow enhancement.

  • Patent number: 5884303
Abstract: A parallel query manager accepts a list of file extents to be searched and produces a number of search lists, one for each disk to be searched. The query manager first uses a mapper to find out how the database spaces are stored on disk. It then matches the search extent list with the mapping information to determine which parts of which disks are to be searched. It then initiates several searches in parallel so that all the affected disks can be kept busy at the same time. The query manager then checks for return data on each stream, and merges the results.

  • Patent number: 5794227
Abstract: A database system holds data in the form of a sequence of records, each record comprising one or more fields. The database can be interrogated by a search query, which specifies a particular logical combination of comparisons to be performed on specified fields of each record. Before the search commences, the search query is compiled to produce an optimized sequence of code for search within a record. Each comparison operation is assigned a cost, reflecting the cost in time to retrieve the required fields and to perform the comparisons, and is also assigned a probability, indicating the probability that the comparison will produce a true result. Each logical operation in the search query is then processed, to find the order of handling its arguments that gives the minimum expected cost, and the arguments are re-arranged into that order.

  • Patent number: 5445295
Abstract: An unattended vending machine for the sale of articles such as compact audio cassette tapes, video cassette tapes, electromagnetic or electro-optical storage devices, or any other device capable of storing recorded information for subsequent reproduction by a patron. The machine displays the various disks or cassettes available, for customer purchase, and is also capable of playing extracts or complete sections of audio or audio-visual entertainment from the available disks or tapes on a video screen or audio speaker. Communications capability is available for transmitting pricing, accounting, and alarms, and for verifying credit cards, and a centralized automatic-ordering system permits reduced human intervention, and the maintenance of high levels of sales with a minimum inventory.

  • Patent number: 4052888
Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus for generating electrical signals representing the instantaneous position and attitude of an object with reference to a coordinate system. A pair of wave transmitters are mounted and controlled so that they follow any movement of the object and are arranged to transmit ultrasonic pulses to three planar transducers arranged to convert the received energy into signals representative of the instantaneous position and attitude of the two transmitters relative to the three transducers. The invention is particularly applicable to apparatus for the ultrasonic examination of bodies having non-planar surfaces and in this case the object referred to is the ultrasonic probe designed to transmit wave energy into the body. The probe may be mounted with one or two degrees of rotational freedom on a boom which is itself mounted with at least two degrees of rotational freedom on a vertical column.
