Publication number: 20220112744Abstract: A latch includes a housing that has a first side and a second side. The latch includes a bolt locking assembly that is positioned at least partially within the housing. The bolt locking assembly includes a bolt movable between first and second positions relative to at least one of the first and second sides of the housing. The bolt is positionable to selectively extend from either the first side or the second of the housing. The latch includes a first handing configuration and a second handing configuration, where the first handing configuration corresponds to the first position and the second handing configuration corresponds to the second position. Changing between the first handing configuration and the second handing configuration requires moving the bolt locking assembly to a disengaged position and applying the external force to the bolt to move the bolt between the first and second positions.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 13, 2021Publication date: April 14, 2022Inventor: Graham Wheatland

Patent number: 10549298Abstract: A pivot-to dispense soap pump includes an actuator that dispenses soap when actuated. The actuator is configured to move downward when actuated by user input. The downward movement may be in either one of a linear movement, maintaining the actuator is a horizontal orientation, or a pivoting movement about a pivot point. The pivot point is located on a distal end of the actuator, which is opposite the nozzle. The pivoting motion allows a user to depress the actuator proximate to the nozzle, thereby allowing the user to dispense soap into the same hand used to actuate the actuator. As a result, efficient, one-handed soap pumping and dispensing is enabled.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2018Date of Patent: February 4, 2020Assignee: Spectrum Brands, Inc.Inventors: Graham Wheatland, Adam Tracy

Publication number: 20080054651Abstract: A handleset mechanism of the sort having a pivoting thumb latch and a rotary handle is provided with a force transmission path to generally improve the actuation by the thumb latch and reduce the required force. One feature is a heart-shaped cam that communicates movement between a spindle driven by the rotary handle, and a slider plate driven by the thumb latch. By using the cam, the force required by the thumb latch is reduced. Another feature is the provision of a curved surface between the thumb latch and the slider plate. Further, in one embodiment, the rotary handle can be actuated without any corresponding movement of the thumb latch.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 15, 2007Publication date: March 6, 2008Inventors: Graham Wheatland, Elena Gorkovenko

Publication number: 20060055183Abstract: A handle set includes a handle assembly having an operator, a rose insert, and a shank having a bore. The rose insert has a central opening and a post. The shank is affixed to the operator and rotatably received in the central opening. A rotational stop is coupled to the rose insert. A spindle guide is slidably received in the bore and is slidable between a locked position and an unlocked position. A kick-off plate having a retention slot is coupled to the spindle guide. A centralizing cup having a single multi-function tang and a lock retention feature is mounted to the shank. The multi-function tang is configured for rotation along a rotational path, the rotation being limited by the rotational stop. The lock retention feature is positioned to engage the retention slot when the spindle guide is in the locked position to thereby retain it in the locked position.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2004Publication date: March 16, 2006Inventor: Graham Wheatland

Publication number: 20050262906Abstract: An interconnected chassis includes a mounting plate including a spring engaging tab. A cover plate includes a recessed spring retention wall. A lower cam has a lower pivot axis. An upper cam has an upper pivot axis. A slide plate is positioned between the mounting plate and the cover plate, the slide plate having a spring retention slot and a spring support ledge. The slide plate includes a first end having a pivot feature and a second end having a lower cam engagement member for engaging the lower cam. A spring is positioned in the spring retention slot of the slide plate and in the recessed spring retention wall of the cover plate, and between the spring engaging tab of the mounting plate and the spring support ledge of the slide plate. A toggle is pivotably coupled to the slide plate by the pivot feature, the toggle having a head portion positioned to engage the upper cam.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 3, 2005Publication date: December 1, 2005Inventors: Oscar Romero, Jeanette Bui, Graham Wheatland

Patent number: 5562314Abstract: A latch assembly for mounting in a bore extending in from a side edge of a door has a backset adjustment for different distances between rotational axis of a handle or keylock and the side edge of the door. The bolt has a concentric aperture into which a bolt adjuster slidably mates with a close tolerance to prevent lateral movement between the bolt and the bolt adjuster. The latch assembly comprises a casing assembly having a bolt assembly longitudinally reciprocal therein between a retracted position and an extended position, the bolt assembly including a bolt with a cylindrical aperture therein, the bolt rotatable and reciprocal relative to a non-rotational cylindrical bolt adjuster and having a sliding fit thereon. A helical groove in one of the bolt or the bolt adjuster engages with a projection of the other of the bolt or bolt adjuster.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1994Date of Patent: October 8, 1996Assignee: Masco Corporation of IndianaInventors: Graham Wheatland, Hagen Dietrich

Patent number: 4984387Abstract: An adapter unit for mechanically driven doors of the type such as garage doors are driven by a motor and guided at the sides thereof by guide rails mounted to a frame that defines the door opening. The adapter unit comprises an elongated member adapted to be mounted to the back side of the door receiving channel of one of the guide rails. The elongated member defines an elongated inverted U-shaped channel in which a chain is slidably received. A sprocket is rotatably mounted in the elongated member within a circular recess defined in the channel for engagement with the chain. The sprocket is further adapted to centrally engage a shaft of the motor to thus rotate therewith. A door drive mechanism is mounted at one end of the chain and is adapted to be removably coupled to a bracket provided on an inner lower part of the door. The sprocket and chain are adapted to remain engaged between the two extreme positions of the chain which correspond with the open and closed positions of the door.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1989Date of Patent: January 15, 1991Assignee: 501 Manaras Auto Doors, Inc.Inventor: Graham Wheatland

Patent number: 4979603Abstract: A universal load sensing gearbox integrating a safety mechanism for use, for instance, with motor driven closures, such as garage doors, barriers and gates, includes a housing which encases a worm slidably mounted on an input shaft and adapted for rotation therewith. The input shaft is connected with the motor driving the closure. The worm is engaged with a worm gear which is mounted on an output shaft which is connected with the closure. Dished washers are provided generally around the input shaft at both ends of the worm to urge the worm in a central meshed engagement with the worm gear. A motion transmission device is provided on the worm and is adapted to slide therewith to detect a longitudinal movement thereof and to transmit this movement to an actuating device which is adapted to stop and/or reverse the motor.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1989Date of Patent: December 25, 1990Assignee: 501 Manaras Auto Doors, Inc.Inventor: Graham Wheatland
