    Abstract: A water soluble copolymer useful as an inorganic pigment dispersant is comprised of a polymerized (1) monomer which is an ethylenically unsaturated organic phosphate or phosphonate and (2) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylated monomer, wherein the amount of the ethylenically unsaturated carboxylated monomer is sufficient to permit the copolymer to associate with an inorganic pigment in an aqueous medium in a manner which disperses the inorganic pigment in the aqueous medium to form a stable aqueous dispersion of the inorganic pigment. The pigment dispersants according to the invention are particularly useful for dispersing concentrated ZnO slurries having a ZnO content of up to about 70% and in slurries containing ZnO in the presence of TiO2.

    Abstract: A method for formulating an aqueous dispersion of a polymer includes dissolving a polymer such as an acrylic polyol in a solvent to form a polymer solution. A surfactant is added to the polymer solution, and water is then added with mixing sufficient to dispersed the polymer in the water. The resulting aqueous dispersion can be mixed with a water dispersible polyisocyanate to produce coating materials which can be cured to form tough films and coatings.

    Abstract: Self-dispersing curable epoxy resin ester dispersions prepared by a process comprising reacting a self-dispersing curable epoxy resin based on a polyoxyalkyleneamine with a fatty acid selected from the group consisting of drying oil and semi-drying oil fatty acids, are provided. The self-dispersing curable epoxy resin is based on a polyoxyalkyleneamine. Thus, a polyoxyalkyleneamine was present as a chemical precursor of the epoxy resin or a starting material therefor. The self-dispersing curable epoxy resin ester of the invention is in the form of an aqueous dispersion. When dried, films of the self-dispersing curable epoxy resin ester dispersion are useful as a coating composition.

    Abstract: A process for fixing dyes impregnated in fine-dimensional synthetic textile substrates in an environmentally safe manner. The process comprises contacting the dyed synthetic substrates with an aqueous solution of a phenol- and formaldehyde-free dye-fixative composition containing a copolymer ofa) 1.0 to about 20 percent by weight of vinyl sulfonic acid residues;b) 5 to 20 percent by weight of nonpolar or hydrophobic monomer residues; andc) 60 to about 94 percent by weight of hydrophilic ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid residues, the copolymers having a weight average molecular weight of from about 1,500 to about 15,000. The contacting step is for a time sufficient so that the dye-fixative composition is absorbed by the fabric.

    Abstract: Superplasticizers for cementitious compositions are produced from a raw material mixture of (1) naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate and (2) free sulfuric acid using a 1-step process or a 2-step process. In the 1-step process, the mixture is neutralized with a zinc compound such as zinc oxide to a pH of about 2 to obtain a superplasticizer mixture of the free acid of the naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate and zinc sulfate. In the 2-step process, the mixture is first neutralized with a zinc compound such as zinc oxide to a pH of about 2 and then with a base such as sodium hydroxide to a pH of about 6 to obtain a superplasticizer mixture of the sodium salt of the naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate and zinc sulfate. These superplasticizer mixtures are superior to a low salt content commercial sodium salt of a naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate where sodium sulfate content has been reduced by lime treatment.

The treated side of the sheet is brought into contact with a developer.
