Publication number: 20180051694Abstract: An electro-mechanical controller is provided for adjusting the pump-stroke in a variety of variable-rate positive displacement piston pumps. The electro-mechanical controller can be attached to work with existing pumps or, in some embodiments, can be integrated into the pump. Using a linear actuator coupled to a pair of nested gears, the actuation of the linear actuator can be transferred into a rotating motion capable of rotating the pump setting adjustment, allowing for “on-the-go” adjustment of the pump-stroke in the variable-rate positive displacement piston pump. The electro-mechanical controllers can be particularly useful in agricultural settings to adjust the amount of fertilizer applied to the soil in response to a variety of inputs such as the GPS or map data, or a signal from a sensor indicating the amount of nitrogen in the soil or plant.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 18, 2017Publication date: February 22, 2018Inventors: Ali Mirzakhani-Nafchi, Ahmad Khalilian, Young Jo Han, Nicholas Grant Rogers

Patent number: 6661819Abstract: A fiber Bragg grating is used to stabilize the intensity and frequency fluctuations of a diode laser. The diode laser is connected with an opto-mechanical apparatus to the fiber which contains the grating. The grating is formed in the guided-mode region of the optical fiber. The wavelength of maximum grating reflectivity is selected to lie near the maximum of the diode laser gain bandwidth. The magnitude and bandwidth of the grating reflectivity stabilizes the diode laser output without appreciably reducing the optical output power from the end of the fiber. The bandwidth of the optical spectrum of the diode laser is selected depending on the distance of the grating from the diode laser.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2001Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: Brian F. Ventrudo, Grant Rogers

Patent number: 5659559Abstract: A fibre Bragg grating is used to stabilize the intensity and frequency fluctuations of a diode laser. The diode laser is connected with an opto-mechanical apparatus to the fibre which contains the grating. A polarization maintaining fibre is used. The grating is formed in the guided-mode region of the optical fibre using photorefractive techniques. The wavelength of maximum grating reflectivity is selected to lie near the maximum of the diode laser gain bandwidth. The magnitude and bandwidth of the grating reflectivity is sufficient to stabilize the diode laser output without appreciably reducing the optical output power from the end of the fibre. The bandwidth of the optical spectrum of the diode laser is increased or decreased relative to the solitary diode laser operating characteristics depending on the distance of the grating from the diode laser.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1995Date of Patent: August 19, 1997Assignee: SDL, Inc.Inventors: Brian F.
