Patent number: 11287550Abstract: Embodiments relate to leads and polynyas forecasting. Initially observed ice forecast data is obtained for a geographic area of interest, which is then used to generate an ice grid based on the observed ice data, where the ice grid includes grid cells that map polar regions. At this stage, daily opening rates are determined based on the ice grid, where each daily opening rate indicates an opening speed of a corresponding ice event, and daily convergence strain rates are determined based on the ice grid, where each daily convergence strain rate indicates a convergence of the corresponding ice event. For each day, a daily opening rate is weighted and then adjusting by a daily convergence strain rate. A forecasted opening rate on a target date is determined based on the weighted, adjusted daily opening rates. Predicted openings of the polar region can be rendered based on the forecasted opening rate.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2017Date of Patent: March 29, 2022Assignee: The Government of the United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Pamela Posey, Richard Arthur Allard, Julia Crout, Gregg Arthur Jacobs

Patent number: 10268783Abstract: System and method for correcting the vertical structure of the ocean temperature and salinity can enable the use of sea surface height (SSH) measurements to correct ocean forecast models. In the present embodiment, three relations that can be precomputed are exploited: (1) the relation between temperature and salinity throughout a water column, (2) the relation between temperature/salinity and geopotential, and (3) the relation between geopotential and SSH. The relations are stored in a form that allows efficient application through a cross-correlation matrix.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2014Date of Patent: April 23, 2019Assignee: The United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Robert W. Helber, Scott R. Smith, Gregg Arthur Jacobs

Patent number: 10215371Abstract: A outdoor lighting fixture includes an enclosure, a heatsink, and an end-cap. The enclosure includes a cabinet and a cover that enclose control and power circuitry to provide power to illuminate a light source. The cabinet further includes an attachment face, and the extruded heatsink can be coupled to the attachment face. The extruded heatsink includes sides, a discontinuous plane of material formed with sides of the heatsink to provide a recessed mounting tray, and heat-conducting fins extending from the plane of material. The light source, which can include an LED light source, is coupled to the heatsink. The extruded heatsink can be coupled at one end to the attachment face of the cabinet at a position such that a space remains between the plane of material and a bottom edge of the attachment face, to permit water to drain from between the heat-conducting fins of the extruded heatsink.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 2015Date of Patent: February 26, 2019Assignee: Cooper Technologies CompanyInventors: Gregg Arthur Lehman, Sridhar Reddy Nimma

Patent number: 10120836Abstract: Embodiments relate to gathering materials on an ocean surface. Initially, an initial distribution of material is determined based on observational sources, and the material is represented by particles in a numerical ocean model. Trajectories for the numerical ocean model are determined based on modeled surface currents data, and velocity gradients are computed along a corresponding trajectory of the trajectories for each of the particles based on the initial distribution. At this stage, deformation tensors are computed for each of the particles based on the velocity gradients, and a dilation map for the particles is generated based on a time step tensor of the plurality of deformation tensors for each of the particles. Collection of the material is monitored based on the dilation map.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2016Date of Patent: November 6, 2018Assignee: The United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Gregg Arthur Jacobs, A. D. Kirwan, Jr., Helga S. Huntley, Bruce L. Lipphardt, Jr.

Patent number: 9587814Abstract: A light emitting diode (LED) module having a configurable LED substrate capable of receiving varying numbers and layouts of LEDs are described herein. The LED substrate includes LED coupling points for receiving the LEDs and electrical traces etched into the substrate for routing power to the LEDs. The LED module can include a multi-LED over-optic having multiple over-optics that are configured to match the number and configuration of the LEDs positioned on the substrate. The LED coupling points and over-optics can be arranged symmetrically to enable the LED module to be rotated to adjust the light output distribution and direction. The LED module can include a power connection mechanism, for example located at the center of the substrate, that also allows the LED module to be rotated. One or more of the LED modules may be mounted on a heat sink and incorporated into a light fixture.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2016Date of Patent: March 7, 2017Assignee: COOPER TECHNOLOGIES COMPANYInventors: Anthony James Carney, Chun Wah Chan, Gregg Arthur Lehman, Ellis Patrick, Christopher Ladewig, Timothy Glen Wright, Christopher Michael Bryant, Victor Diegues
