Abstract: Tools and techniques are described herein for personalizing handheld electronic book readers. The tools provide methods that include receiving an indication of a customer transaction involving an electronic book reader device. The methods may also receive an identifier associated with the customer, obtain personalization information associated with the identifier, and load the personalization information into the electronic book reader device. The tools also provide methods that include receiving a command that is input to the electronic book reader device, where the device has been personalized for the particular customer; and responding to the command using the personalization information. A server includes a processor and a computer-readable storage medium that includes a device personalization component for personalizing the electronic book reader device.

Abstract: A handheld electronic book device having asymmetrical shape is described herein. The device includes a display screen and an asymmetrical housing containing the display screen. The non-symmetrical housing has a wedge-shaped configuration, in which one side is comparatively thinker than an opposing side.

Abstract: A keyboard layout for a handheld electronic book device is described herein. The device includes a display screen adapted for displaying visible representations of textual or graphic content related to the electronic book. The device also includes a keyboard for controlling presentation of the content. The keyboard includes two sets of keys. A first set of keys is arranged in an arcuate configuration relative to a first point of reference on the device. A second set of keys is arranged in an arcuate configuration relative to a second point of reference on the device. The second point of reference is spaced from the first point of reference on the device. One or more of the first set of keys and one or more of the second set of keys are arranged in a horizontal row.

Abstract: A reader device and method for operating a reader device include content indexing features designed to make the use of a reader device more satisfying. A plurality of indexes is stored on a reader device. One of the indexes stored in the reader device is also stored at a remote site. Several indexes stored at the remote site may be substantially similar to one or more of the indexes stored on a reader device. The indexes stored at the remote site may be used to update one or more indexes stored on a reader device. In one implementation, the reader device is an electronic book (“eBook”) reader device.

Abstract: A page turner is provided for a handheld electronic book reader device. The page turner is configured to detect a human gesture to turn a page in an electronic book that is being displayed by the device. In one implementation, the page turner is configured as a page turning mechanism having at least one tactile member (e.g., ridge, indentation, etc.) and at least one sensor positioned proximate to the tactile member to detect gesture proximity. The tactile member provides tactile feedback as the user passes a finger over the mechanism to simulate a riffle sensation akin to flipping through paper pages in a paperback book. In certain implementations, the eBook reader device has a non-symmetrical shape with a dual display system and QWERTY keyboard.

Abstract: A technique in which content is supplied to an electronic reader device from a server is described. The reader device establishes a connection with the server and then automatically transmits its identification information to the server. In response, the server provides the electronic reader device with a representation corresponding to electronic content available from the server for purchase and/or display. The electronic reader device displays the representation wherein a user of the client electronic device purchases content by selecting the representation on the display. The server acknowledges the selection and/or purchase and automatically provides the electronic reader device with the corresponding electronic content for display.
